brake fluid or gear oil in brake drum
posted this in another forum just need opinions.
noticed fluid on the inside of my rear passenger side wheel and tire today. took wheel and drum off. pretty wet in the drum. the wheel cylinder looked dry although i didn't have a big enough socket to get that big nut off. brake fluid level wasn't noticeably low. is there a way for 90 weight to make it from the rear end into the drum? it smelled like 90 weight possibly. maybe i should of done a taste also?

Yep, if the axle seal leaks you'll see it in the drum.
Gear oil is pretty distinctive, so if you think you smelled it, you did. Brake fluid has next to no odor. |

Seal update
Pulled the tire off the other day. I could peek behind the hub, the seal takes 5 studs and nuts to hold it on. One stud and nut are missing no wonder it leaks. I see fresh sealant around the part so the previous owner maybe broke one of the studs off? Anyway it leaks.
I needed a hub puller picked one up at auto zone. I have it on there and that hub is TIGHT. I have a long pipe as a helper but it's not budging the hub. Should i try heat? If i do should i heat the shaft or the hub right around the shaft? http://www.windrockoffroad.com/PLATE/6116/index.htm 8-312 is the seal i'm trying to get to |

Every time I have tried this, I had to remove the hub...and that took a lot of work. The hub is pressed in place. Basically, it took a special puller. Hooked onto the hub via 3 lug nuts. Then, the press tightened down. The press portion had 2 big heads that you could hit (tighten) with a sledge hammer. Evenutally, it all popped off. I have tried other methods of removing the hub, but none worked (had a friend with a 2.5 ton hydraullic press and some chain, tried torch, etc.).

have found through past screw-up's that it is wise to check the big axle nut's once a year or so, even with cotter pin they will eventually get some slack in them.

Inner seal amc 20 rear axle and bearing question
I bought a new inner seal it looks nothing like the seal thats in the axle. the one i took out the whole face you see when installed is rubber which might seal better. the new one the face you see installed is a metal cap. the rubber face is probably the better style because it might seal better than metal around the outside edge if that makes sense.
where i'm at now::: while we're on the subject. does the bearing on the shaft just tap on or have to be pressed somehow? one site i saw online said bearing with retaining clip. carquest sold me a bearing and said they're no such clip needed. thx Last edited by tr6; 09-23-2005 at 05:34 PM..
