I suppose it is, unless you don't care how it looks and you add your
own rubber at the u-joints. That's all it is, rubber. Sure theirs is
molded to look pretty but you may have read where I used my old
stabilizer bushings up top and one shackle bushing on the lower end...

sorry to revive an old thread, but its better than starting a new one!
can you take a pic of this? im thinking about getting the borgeson and would love to save the $30. also, was there a difference between the stock shaft and the borgeson? with something like this i kind of need to be convinced its worth it since my stock one still works.

When I put mine on I indexed the set screws, marked em with a dry pencil and drilled a indent about 1/8th or a bit deeper to allow the set screws a place to sit and tighten into, it's been great for me with no issues, I love mine and what it did for my steering

My stock shaft seems ok w/ 33x12.50's. But I'm going from an old Rancho 3" to a 4" (both sua) lift, but adding a 1" body lift. Is this a "needed right now" item, or someting I can do IF I have a problem w/handling. My budget is getting thin, and the extra $100 upgrade over HD stock, seems like overkill for something that isn't gonna see any HD boulder fields.

Just wanted to re-revive this thread again. I just installed the vibration-damper model Borgeson, and without being able to drive it yet I'm pretty pleased with it. The old shaft was a bit hard to get off, had to PB blast both ends and rubber hammer the splined sections to get the old one out. Took a couple hours of sitting with PB and some hammering and out it came.
The installation of the Borgeson was pretty simple, with some notes:
- I did not file for the set screws, just used the old flats. I don't plan to wheel it much and the flats, although deep and wide, I think will hold up once the set screws have been driven, especially since both ends are splined and I'd rather not reduce the integrity of those old shafts if I don't have to. I also liberally applied loctite to the splines at both ends. If it's good enough for John Nutter, it's good enough for me.
- I had to undo the joint set screws on the lower half u-joint and flip it 180*; for whatever reason my upper and lower flats were 180* to each other. Don't guess this will be an issue, but again it hasn't been driven yet and won't be for a few days.
- I also found it easier to install the u-joint ends separately from the shaft itself. It was easier to manage just the ends, mallet them in, and then slide the shaft in separately.
The shaft looks great, but I'm thinking later on in the rebuild I'll take it out and paint it, probably when the tub has to come off.

I used the flats on mine as well and have had no problems so far.

I am replacing my steering shaft with the telescoping Borgeson Monday after a 1" body lift. I hope it goes easy. We will see.

I know this thread is old, but my question is: Is the shaft itself larger diameter from the stock one? I have a chevy 350 and my header on the drivers side is pretty close already to the shaft!

Just measured the circumference of my OEM shaft and the Borg and they are indistinguishable.

FYI, I just bought the vibration dampening version for the same price as the non-dampening versions HERE and got 25% off of shipping with code: 25OffShipping. I haven't installed it yet, but it showed up pretty quick & looks well built. I also appreciate the 5 year warranty.

Are the people who used the stock flats still not having any problems after a few months, I really don't want to grind mine down.

I didn't do a thing but install it - stock flats have held up since whenever I put it in a few months ago.

Mine's still in refurbish mode, so I can't speak for longevity, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. I do recommend drilling the hole that is mentioned though. I almost forgot to mention, I took a pic of the OEM & Borgeson units side by side (I painted the Borgeson before taking the pic, it comes as raw steel). I didn't measure the diameter, but the Borgeson unit definitely had more heft to it.
