It doesn't work as well if you don't have a manual lockup capability on the Torque Converter.

Barking tires, how about breaking axles and other parts?

I'll let you know how it works. I doubt any TC locks up the converter in first, ( with the exception of using a switch. like i have in the Super Duty. I don't believe a Th400 ever had a lock up, just like a 727. The guy who helped me with the install would know how and why, I didn't ask him.
If I have the time on Friday I'll call TCI, the makers of the part and ask them. My feeble mind tells me it's about the direction or restriction of fluid,
All of our Fire engines had a trans retarder, worked pretty good, not as good as the Exhaust brakes we have now. Both of them worked good enought to warrant a warning on the dash saying not to use them in wet or slippery conditions.
Second, you forget, I don't have a heavy foot like a certain member of or club, ;-). Charlie did tell me it won't bang into gear, and I did ask about that, he didnt for see a problem.

Bill

Edit, the TH400 ended production around '87. About the same time the TH700r4/ 4L60 and 4L80 came about, with overdrive and the lock up TC . I do know one thing for sure, like the 727 it's one darn tough tranny.

The transmission vent tube on the TH400 was broken. Not a big deal, it was plastic anyway. I wanted to drill and tap the hole for a brass fitting, problem was, we didnt have a NPT tap. So, I used a 1/4" grease zerk and drilled out the center with a 1/8" bit,( this took care of the little spring) then knocked the ball out with a punch, the threads on the zerk are self tapping. I used a socket with a screw for a stop. Using inward pressure ran the zerk into the hole , a little loctite was used on the threads. Some fuel line and a clamp and I was done.

Started the tranny swap today, but first I helped a friend ( the guy that broke his pinion) remove some bearings.

image-999591699.jpg

I pulled the drive shafts, Qtrac supply lines, Low range unit and the transfer case itself.

The tranny comes out Saturday morning, and the built one goes in.

Why do you think I posted the picture? :-)

I haven't forgot I owe you a gas can, I think I'll just send you a check, or a gift card.

Those are the best!!! Ya know, the 2a that Dr. Dirt has would make a nice addition to your fleet! Word is its darn fast, John told me it would break the tires loose in 4th gear.

You got a safety belt and cup holder to go along with the hospital rails on your creeper? Kinda makes me want to take a nap in it.

:-). Good one Paul. I do believe I have taken a nap or 2 on the creeper. One time I had a dream. It was about YJ tubs, and why it's so difficult to get the floor pans welded in.

Went a little further after my post. Tranny jack in place.

.

image-537022345.jpg

3 bolts hold the converter to the flex plate. I rotated the flexplate 1 tooth at a time to gain access to them.

image-3426379105.jpg

With a couple long extensions removing the bolts is next. Removing them is way easier than putting them back in.

I'll call Friday if I can. I have a deadline Sunday night at 10PM, and I get most of my writing done between 10PM and 2AM- only time I can get peace and quiet around here. In the meantime, I'll run the risk of public ridicule and paste my PM here!

Hey Bill! Hope you're doing well. Alas, school has started again, and the Jeep sits in the garage patiently awaiting my return. Just wanted to drop you a "hello". I am pretty busy with three classes, the house, some work, and the full time job of dad. I have to kinda stay away from JF while I work and write, or I will get nothing done. I check it every so often, but I have a pretty heavy load this semester. I have already produced about 60 pages of material, and I'm less than a month into it. Grad school sux a little. I am looking forward to a break already! CJ still needs some carb work, seats and a windshield, but it ain't goin' nowhere. Should I put some StaBil in the tank? I have about 3 gallons in there that probably won't be burned for a bit. I have another question about the idle on the J truck, but I'll call you for that one- it'll be much easier over the phone. I don't know when I'll get around to it, but I won't call too late, and ignore it if it isn't a good time! See ya Billy G.
Chris

UPDATE: Found out the J truck problem. When I let off the gas pedal, the engine would continue to idle high. If I gently bumped the gas, it would drop off. The throttle return spring rusted and busted. Had a few in the garage from experimenting with the CJ, and had the perfect fit. Done!

Bill,

If you have an iPhone, try these doing this to delete PM's:

1. While in the main PM inbox screen, identify the PM for deletion.

2. Swipe your right finger over the intended PM (start about an inch from the right side of the screen and exaggerate the swipe as if your going off the screen.

3. A red in color pop up 'DELETE' feature should appear where you just swiped your finger.

4. Press 'DELETE' and the PM will disappear.

Note: this swiping process also works to delete text messages, etc.

Works great!!! Thank you

Since your up in goods country, just a little north of me check this out. http://www.shotguneddy.com/Welcome.html
We've only been once and had a great time. The rafts wernt anything sepctular, in fact all but one of the handles were broke off.

I have a great story about the trip, it's best told in person. Everytime my wife told it see couldn't finish telling it without busting out laughing. It was 15 years ago. It still causes her to LOL when I tell someone.

Basically what happened is, I ended up floating down the river in sun glasses, and life jacket, Nothing else!!!
So if you happen to go, tie the little string that holds up your swim trunks. LOL

with a smile on my face, Billy G.
