Gotcha, I thought you were referring the the Q-trac transferring power front to rear as the problem.

CJ 5 work. Topped off all fluids. Swapped the steering column for one that has a tilt, put a new air filter on, and added some padding to the main hoop of the roll bar so MoC doesn't go home with dents on his head.

The steering column was original to the Jeep, I replaced it with one from a '83 Jeep. The replacement didnt have the ignition switch, I used one off a '83 Chevy pickup. The only difference in the actual switch is the wiring connections are upside down.

This Jeep has a Borgenson steering shaft. So it basically took 2 minutes to remove it from the column.

He USED to climb right out the back, but now that he's needing a tilt wheel he may have to get his friends to do it!

So, Bill, I'm confused, which is rather normal for me.

Which CJ did you swap the Q-jet for a Holley, and how did that install go? Have you had a chance to run the Holley?

That's awesome Scott. Thanks!!!

Matt, my CJ 5 started with a Quadrajet, ran it for 2 years. Not being one to ask questions , I bought a 470 TA Holley to try. This is when I found out the Q-jet was better off road. I left the Holley on the 5.
Enter the 360 in the Quadratrac CJ 7, I put the Q-jet on it.

I seem to be using the 7 more than the 5 so it worked out good.
After Moab last year I had some fuel issues related to the damn ethanol crap. This was on the 5 with the Holley.

So now it's time for our big trip, I just happened to have another Q-jet on the CJ to YJ. I didn't want to remove the Jet from that engine, I also didnt want to jack with the Holley, cause I knew the Jet was better. So I put the Jet ( cj to yj) on the 5.

That's where I'm at today.

If you read the link on the Q-jet, you know the only draw back to the Jet is the small fuel bowl. For me this wasn't a problem on all the trails I go on, except for the sand dunes I went on for the first time last year.

This is why I'm picking up the Holley 670 TA , for the dunes at the end of September, for the Q-trac 360 . When I get back the Jet is going back on the 7 Q-trac. ( I will be taking the Jet with me, so I can try it after the mods in the link.

I just ran out of time in getting ready for this trip. I hope to do the mod to the large air valve ( the one on the top back) I have a spare Jet with me. I'm also going to drill the small vacuum pod that's on the rear. I have the .012" bit. Actually it's .0134" , its the smallest one I could find . This bit is the smallest bit I have ever seen, not a typo, it's .0134" . I hope my pin vise is small enough to hold it.

Stay tuned.

Also the 670 will be going on the J truck at a later date. My hope is to take the truck to Moab next year. Haha if I get it finished.

Bill

I proof read this twice. I hope you can make sense from it.

The fuel issues were directly related to the ethanol . I run a fuel cell in my CJ 5, it came with open cell foam in the cell. This is to help with fuel sloshing around in the tank. Well, the ethyl crap dissolved to foam. To the point where it went thru the filter and into the needle and seats in the fuel bowl.

image-3784326747.jpg

How the hell it got thru the filter I don't have a clue. There were pieces larger that seen in the filter holding the needle open on the seat.

I removed the foam from the cell, and cleaned everything before starting the engine with the Q-jet. I also changed to a paper style filter.

You may ask why I used this filter with no return. I'll tell you why. The engine is a SBC, the fuel return is part of the fuel pump.

I would add, I've never had a vapor lock condition on either Jeep. And the exhaust pipes are within inches of the fuel line. The pipe on the fuel line side is wrapped on the SBC.

I may do some experimenting while at the dunes. I'm going to crimp down the return, or reduce the size of the return line. This is in the hope the Q-jet will keep enough fuel in the bowl.

Bill,

Yikes!! What grade (octane level) are your running? That looks nasty.

I'm still not happy with the transition from primary to secondary on my Q-jet when I really romp on it. The standard adjustments haven't completely cured it. So, I'll keep an eye out for the report on your mods.

Have a fun and safe trip, my friend.

87 or 89 octane. Still the same amount of

Ethanol. Thru my research I found a foam that is ethanol resistant.
I really think the notches will help. It just seems to make sense to get the air flowing thru the secondary's .

And thanks for the good wishes.

Bill

"Squeeze by, lucky for me, I'm not a big guy." Once again Randy Nueman's song Short People comes to mind!

Now I am thoroughly curious to see if MoC accent will rub off on Billy or will that gawdawfull West Peoria accent rub off on MoC? Or will they kinda rub off on each other creating some kinda gawd awful accent!

Now for those of you wondrin if Peoria actually has a couple different accents its kinda true, Ya-ll see that Peoria aint that big so the train tracks never go through town but out there you can be from the wrong side of the liquor store!
