Don't forget George, we saw your picture when i visited you and the Gator.

More non CJ stuff. I bought the Henry , in 22 mag. Whoops I think I posted that already. Anyway I went to 5 different gun shops today, picked up another 100 rounds of 2lr, and 100 22 mag. Looked at a lot of other guns as well. Mainly a 20 gauge for Vicki. Not a lot of used stuff around, I could get about any AR style I wanted thou. And I did find a small amount of 223 ammo as well.
Unfortunately for me, the gun budget is at at $0.00 at this time . Haha , matches the Jeep budget.

So now it's Decision time , work on the YJ to CJ , or a J truck. The YJ to CJ needs either a SYE In the TC, or a 231c TC from a S10. And the rear axle needs pinion bearings. I also need to make a stand alone radiator support, so the 1 piece glass front clip can be installed.

At this point the J truck is basically cost free. To get it going I need to remove the 360/727 from the tree smashed Grand Wagoneer, and install them into the J truck. Also the radiator. I already have a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear with 4.56 gears. So it's just time, and a small amount of cash for Incidentals. After I can move the J truck under its on power, the bed is coming off, axles swapped in a SOA, and shorten the wheel base. Also thinking of 4 linking the rear.

So I have no time, and no disposal income at this time, at least for Jeep stuff. I also have a set of Dana 44 axles for the Q-trac jeep, ( still running the 20/30.) also have used 4.88 gears for same. ( only one axle) . I'm thinking this will have to wait, the way I see it, I've abused the crap out of the AMC 20, (with only 1 piece axles) and a completely stock Dana 30 with 33/13:50:15 LTB's and a 360. My thought is keep running them, so I can, in part, refute dissing of these axles during off road use. With pictures and video to back it up.
Your thoughts on this!!!

Quite a number of members here on JF have dissed these axles, I have yet to see pictures or video of a broken one. With the exception of the bent tubes on mine last year, and the broken ring gear I did 2 years ago, trying to pull a 3/4 Chevy out of deep mud, while in reverse. And this was with 36" IROC's, some may remember the pics.

IMHO, to break one of these axles a couple things have to happen.
1.) don't know when to back off the skinny pedal.
2.) doing something you probably shouldn't have tried, case in point, my broken ring gear on the 30.

If your new to my thread, you may not have read about my first trip to MOAB, this was with a Dana 30. With upgraded axle shafts, a lock rite, and 36" bias IROCS at 4 psi with beadlocks.

Our group ( including me) did some of the hardest trails in MOAB. This includes Prittchet Canyon. My Dana 30 preformed without issue. After the ring gear break , I installed a GM 10 bolt, with a lock rite, and shortened 4" on the long side. This was to match the 6 on 5.5 lug pattern on the rear Dana 44.

Bill,

Anything you can do to support a CJ's original equipment, I'm on board.

I haven't rolled over the trails you have, but I've had my heap into terrain that I thought a stock CJ would never go. That was with a 6-banger, open 2-piece axles, and 2:73 gears!!

I think the operator has a lot to do with it.

Matt

Us old guys can look back at this kind of stuff and KNOW it's all about the operator.
Been there, done that, wrote the book, attended all the book signings!

Bill... as much as I would like to see the YJ/CJ conversion completed, Ima say drop the drivetrain in the J Truck so you can scrap the busted Waggy, and pick up a little working capital. -OR-... better yet, put the 360 in the Willys. Now THAT would be a worthwhile project.

Well as you all know we have Scott Kerr on the forum and he is called the Skipper since he does have very similar attributes to the Skipper from Gilligan's Island a 60s TV show.

As you well know Skipper is friends will Billy G and he too shows similar characteristics to a 60s television icon, but I had a hard time figuring out which one till the gas can incident!

Now let me tell you about the gas can incident. A couple months ago Billy needed a gallon of Hydraulic Jack Oil which was no big deal except that the only container I had was an old empty one gallon gas can. I put the oil in the gas can and told him not to forget were it came from and he agreed not to forget!

Well on Tuesday my Jeep ran out of gas in my driveway and I figured well Ill grab the gas can and get a gallon so I go to grab the can, and guess what its in Peoria Il ARRRGGGHHH!

So I head out to buy a gas can and everywhere I go they have these new fangled safety gas cans that require 3 hands and a PHD in physics to operate. These new cans are National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) approved and Slick Billy knew that you cant get the old style cans anymore so he kept mine! BTW these new cans leak and spill much more than the old style!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I got to thinking about Slick Billy and the steering wheel incident with the Skipper and then it dawned on me; Slick Billy acts just like Mr. Haney from Green Acres also a 60s TV show.

Now for those of you youngins like Matt and Daniel that dont know about Green Acres I have included a You Tube clip. Mr Haney can be seen at about the 6 min 45 second mark and I swear that is Billy to a tee!~

I was thinking something more like this, George.

Heck, even the truck looks like Billy's.

From now on I'll read all of Bill's posts in Mr. Haney's squeaky country twang. Haha

I'm looking for a Scout II Dana 300. Drop me a line if you have any leads. Thanks

George, Possession is 9/10's of the law! Said gas can is now under lock and Key.

Matt, don't feed the Troll. Remember he spent time in Komiforina .

Daniel, go ahead and do that.

Been a busy week on Billy G's ranch for rust.

I started on the Tree crushed Grand Wagoneer. Pulled the center consul and seats, then went on to the Engine/tranny/TC removal. This is a picture of the front drive shaft from 2 PO's ago

It appears a double cardan shaft was cut in half, and a 3" piece of Galvanized waterpipe was welded in. A proper DC is shown on the bottom. The rear DS was not quite as bad, still hacked though.

To give a idea of how hi the GW sits, here it is with SOA on 33's, next to my CJ with 3" of lift on 35's. wow

No pics of the tranny/TC removal, except this one.

I punched a hole in the 727 with a screw driver, and let it drain. I'll weld it up tomorrow.

Nothing exciting about the removal of parts, with the exception of making a extension for my engine hoist to get the engine high enough for removal.

Plenty of room for bolt access with the tranny cover removed.

Engine out.

And In the J truck!

Name: image-1350968184.jpg
Views: 36
Size: 488.2 KB

Tranny, and radiator in as well.

That's when I found this in the neatly coiled wiring under the brake booster. The PO cut all the wires in a convenient location, and sent all the connectors with the engine when he sold it.

Name: image-1194686536.jpg
Views: 36
Size: 500.3 KB

So I cut the wires from the GW.

Name: image-2790535213.jpg
Views: 36
Size: 449.9 KB

Like our CJ's all the wires that are important are the same color between the '78 truck and the '84 GW.

So tomorrow is welding up the tranny pan and paint and install, along with the Dana 300 from a CJ. Then mock up a temporary driveshaft, and fill fluids so it can be moved around.

The J truck is sitting low in the back due to a Chevy Dana 60, and what ever else I could store in the bed.

The GW is getting the axles removed ( from a '78 Ford F-250, hi pinion 44 front {driver drop}and Dana 60 rear.) steering column, and a bunch of small stuff that may come in handy. Then It's off the the scrap yard.

Everyone knows how close the back of the engine and top of the bell housing is to the firewall. In the Waggy and J truck there is about 8" of clearance.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

You got a lot done Bill, I bet that J truck will be a fun ride. I see that I'm not the only one using ARAFFF foam buckets around the house.
