I like Navel Jelly, and it's available at Ace Hardware. I used it before repainting my battery tray after my old POS battery leaked acid all over it and corroded the hell out of it. I then used it again before herculining the tub and have been pleased in both cases. I just ground the rust as well as possible with a wire wheel on the end of a drill, then brushed on Navel Jelly liberally with a brush (I think I then rinsed it like they say). After it dried real well, I wiped everything down with lacquer thinner and painted away.
I've used Ospho in the past for similar uses and have been equally as satisfied. In all cases, though, I've painted with either Herculiner or Rustoleum, so that probably helped.

Check this stuff out. It is a rust converter and primer. It converts the rust to magnetite and than seals the surface. I have had good results with it. Topcaoting with a thick enamel paint afterwards is a good idea for durability. Por-15 is good stuff to, but I do not think it converts the rust it jsut seals it. I have had por15 fail though after being chipped and rust starting again where it has chipped off. Dont buy the cheapo rust converters they sell at auto parts stores or walmart. You want industrial grade stuff. It is a little more pricy, but generally cheaper than replacing a part. Good luck, Tim |
