best front axle set for 35''tires with a 300Hp engine

My problem is that i want an ox locker (900$) and i dont want to invest that money into an axle that will need upgrading when i do more lift and larger tires.

I have been looking for a scout dana 44 with no luck.

1. what are the other options to run a big tire with a big engine and not break it every wheeling trip, and not have it look silly wide??

i am looking for opitions. and i dont know about cutting down an axle with out a very good write up with lots of pictures.

I used a 44 out of a mid 70's waggy. Had to outboard the front shackle hangers on the frame. The tires are 36 12.50's. I think it looks nice, mind you I do not have the front flares on so it looks wider. I am not sure how the axles would hold up to those tires with 300hp though. All depends on the skinny pedal I guess.

I'm thinking a custom ford 9" from currie enterprises is in my jeep's future. I haven't decided if I'll keep the AMC 20 (just sunk some beans into it with moser shafts after all).

I spoke with one of their sales guys last year and he said I could get a flat-bottom ford 9" front geared to my specifications with pre-set caster and an arb or ox locker for about $3k. Rear was about the same. These can turn 37" tires under 400 hp.

A custom dana 44 is also available for less, but if you're gonna go custom, might as well drop plastic on the best. The fords aren't dana 60s, but who wants a boat anchor with 35" tires?

I'm done with low pinion Dana 44s. If you are going to put a front Dana 44 axle on something with big tires and a big engine then go with a high pinion Dana 44 out of a Ford truck and just change the tubes so the diff is on the passenger side. I have a scout front axle now and a 77 Ford F150 axle is in the back yard to eventually replace it. If you think you will have 37" or bigger tires then a Dana 60 is the way to go.

When did Ox Lockers become available for the Ford 9"?

I do not believe they are, but it does look like they have an application for the 8.8

A locked 44 with 300hp is going to spit shafts out all the time. Chromo shafts and good joints will go a long way.

I was breaking my stock shafts with 36's and 170hp every single trip.

RCV's would be your best bet for shafts.

The only way to slow down the inevitable is to put a Dana 60 in the front with 35 spline shafts. Next to that its either Unimog portal axles or Rockwell 2.5 ton axles.

I would go with a Dana 60 and be done with it. Do it once.

Beat it to fit, paint it to match!

Wheel, Wrench, Repeat.

Well if it's the "inevitable" then there really isn't an option to "be done with it". SO I guess the argument could lead to the biggest most expensive ridiculous thing ever.

The problem I have with 60's is that the center section partially removes one benefit from larger tires, which is to lift the axles further off the ground. But they are very strong. But so are Rockwells. But so are 44's compared to 30's.

I think you really need to determine what it is you want compared to how much modifying you are willing to do and how much money you are willing to spend. So when you say "More lift and larger tires" how big do you mean?

I had the same tires as you have. They are heavy and love destroying 44 outers and joints. And as I said, I had half the horsepower you have.

Then I went to a D60 with chromo's and never looked back. haha

Edit: 36's on a D60 will be a lot of fun and bullet proof. You are going to hate yourself when the 44 starts kitting itself over and over. I regret ever going to a 44.

Yup, you're right. They quoted the ARB and I extrapolated that an OX would also be available.

I wish the Ox WAS available for the 9". They told me that there wasn't enough room in the case for one to fit. Someday I may try to build one of my own.
