Last year I decided to swap out my motor in my CJ7, and I was juggling the issues of whether or not to go with an 8cyl or stick with a rebuilt 258. I went with the 258 just mostly for ease of install and savings on parts, but I am very happy I went that way.

The new engine has more than enough power to get me around and as everyone else said, it's plenty to go offroad with. Another vote for the 258 from here.
