I've got a friend who bought a Scrambler that had been bedlinered inside, outside and underneath. It looked pretty good when he got it. It took about 2 years, but the stuff started coming off in sheets and the metal under it was gone. The stuff lets just enough moisture in, then doesn't let it out; so the body rots away. His might have done it anyway, but I'm not a fan of doing this.

Gosh I wish I could dig up the thread from forever ago where I guy posted a lot of good pics of his herculiner'd tub (in and out), but none the less...

This month's JPmagazine has a writeup on using Durabak bedliner to do it, with some pretty good results. I will end up doing this myself eventually.

I know there are a couple of JU threads worth checking out, like this one, but like said, can't find the others....

If you're not trying to win a show, and you're desperate to preserve the tub, I think you can do it with passable results....

I'm still concerned about what John N is saying... sucking in the moisture and not letting it out... I think the only real option is to get it Line-X'ed but thats a crapload of money

Just think of the bright side though, nearly small arm bullet proof

Isn't that a matter of preparation and appropriate application though? I can't imagine properly applied bedliner would trap and collect moisture... kind of defeats the point right? I guess it could be another instance of you get what you pay for.... I don't know, I've only messed with bedliner a couple of times... Undercoating now, well, that's a different story... that crap never comes off....

I used dupli-color this past summer on the entire inside of my tub. i used a red scuff pad a went over the paint to rough it up. i also ground down any rough spots or sharp edges. the gallon i got was $39.99 and i did the entire tub twice. it's not very thick like the spray on stuff but it is very easy to clean and look great. has not peeled or lifted anywhere yet. just make sure you do good prep and clean it well and you should have no problems.

Oh, yes that rattlecan stuff does. I've put it on the bottom of more than one vehicle only to have it flake off.

mine was over the inside of the jeep not under and it was the paint on style not rattlecan. i just dumped about half the gallon in and spread it around and then used the roller it comes with to give it the nice texture.

I did mine last summer (Herculiner). It looks good (spent 2 days prepping) and has not peeled at all, even with dragging scuba tanks going in and out of the back with no tailgate . I don't see how moisture would get through it unless it was infiltrating through a seam. Ive got ~$150 in mine and a lot of time. Line-X is the way to go if you get it professionally done. That stuff is nice

I'm in the process of prepping my CJ-7 right now. I've got the Herculiner kit but I plan on spraying it on rather than rolling it on. My last hurdle is finding an appropriate spray gun. I'm hoping to have it finished by the end of the week. If so, maybe I can post pics.

mines just a hunting and play around jeep so i really didn't care much about the texture. they sell a texture brush w/the kit and once you spread it around and it sets up a bit it gives it a nice no-slip rough texture. i have hauled bricks and all kinds of stuff in mine since then and it is not even scratched. it wipes out nicely and looks as good as they day i did it. like a few of us had said " it's all in the prep work" like a good paint job just take ur time and you won't have to do it again.

and just an FYI: they do have they spray stuff but i haven't used it. here in PA 2 the local wal-mart they sell it by the gallon so it was much cheaper and you could really lay it on thick if you wanted to.

I used the duplicolor spray on rattle can to do my grill, and a new england firearms handi rifle stock...both tunred out nice...not as rough as most bedliners...its like 280 sand paper is what i think compares best to it...i recently got herculiner for christmas...did the inside tub, door channels, windsheild frame, all hinges, bumpers, and rocker pannels...it has a really rough texture and turned out real great...i prefer the hurculiner but for the price you can't beat the duplicolor for 39.99 a gallon compared to 89.00 a gallon for herculiner...if you take your time prepping and everything it should last a while

Greetings

Having lived in this wonderful state which blesses us every year with severly caustic road salt, I decided to go to the farthest extent of securing our YJ.
We began by ordering POR 15 and after three days of prep work, managed to coat the frame twice with this application. (about $60 for the kit on ebay) The stuff goes a long way and it smooths out amazingly well when you paint it on with a brush. (No fancy paint guns for me) After the POR 15 was applied, I had a lot left over so I prepped and coated the entire tub of my girlfriend's Sahara.
Once this step was done, I went down to Autozone and cleaned them out for rust proofing stuff. I purchased Herculiner and subsequently applied two coats on the YJ. I chose not to do this to the Girlfriend's Sahara because it is pretty rough looking and she would probably *****. After I applied the Herculiner in two coats, I used a generic bed liner paint that you can purchase for about fifteen dollars a quart. Finally, I am taking the YJ to get Zeibarted next week.

My final thoughts and lessons learned.
1. Buy and use lots of rubber gloves, especially with the POR 15. It [U]wont[U]come off your hands.
2. Make sure you have something else to drive or do this project over the weekends. It takes time.
3. Make sure the area your working in is well ventilated or prepare to get high off your ***. (And possibly sick)
4. POR 15 is some serious stuff. It applies right onto rust so make sure your frame has a nice bronze color to it. I took a wire wheel and rubbed off all the original black paint and let it sit outside for two weeks before I got to work.
5. Will this whole process work? So far it has but I have only had the project finished for a month.
