I have isolated the issue, but haven't resolved it yet. Hooked up an external tank up to the fuel pump at lunch today. Engine ran like a champ. Maybe I should pull a "Firemarshal Bill" and just run a fuel line through the floorboard to a gas container strapped to the passenger seat. "Here ya go honey, go take her for a spin now!"

The hard line leading to the tank is free of debris or holes, I am going to drop the tank (brand new) tonight to see if I can see what is creating the blockage. As mentioned, I can see the fuel line running to the sending unit and it isn't blocked. I have no idea what the problem could be with it. New tank, new fuel.

I'll update later.

I just thought of something. When I assembled the sending unit, I pushed the fuel sock way up the fuel pickup tube. Did I push it too far? Guess I'll see later.

Ok, knock on wood, but it appears it is now fixed. Thought I would update this in case anyone ever runs into the same issue.

Tonight, I dropped the tank, disconnected the hard line running along the rail from the tank to the fuel pump and blew it out good with compressed air, then checked the rubber connection from the hard line running into the tank outlet. No blockage. Next, as I prepared to removed the sending unit, I noticed I could see part of the O ring squished outside of the locking ring on the sending unit. An O ring came packaged with both the new fuel tank, and the new sending unit. I used the one that came with the sending unit. On further inspection, it looked as though that O ring was a little large for the tank opening, preventing a perfect seal. I used the other O ring, snugged the sending unit on and when I moved the tank into position to bolt it back up, gas was freely pooring out of the outlet hose on top (I hadn't reconnected it to the hard line leading to the pump yet).

SOOOOOooo, my thinking is that I in fact DID have an air leak, it was just on the tank. Note to self--double check your O ring seal before bolting the tank up. This is all can guess was the problem. I cranked it and let it run for a few minutes, and all was good. We shall see. I'm considering this repair complete, but if not, I'll be posting again!

Skerr-

Doesn't make sense at all. Particularly since there are other "vents" (fuel filler/fuel filler vent/charcoal canister hookups which are blocked off). It's baffling, but it was something in the sending unit assembly for sure. I pulled the sending unit out of the tank, checked the sock and ensured everything was operational and nothing was amiss, but aside from the O ring, I didn't change a thing.

It ran great idling in the driveway. Had to make a "milk run" tonight and couldn't gather the cajones to take it for a spin out of the neighborhood

I'm glad u posted that. I think my issue may be the exact same thing. I know my sending unit gasket is leaking. I just havent had the time to pull the tank and replace it but I intend to do the exact same thing u did. Thanks for posting up.

Gido-

Hope that ends up resolving your problem. I finally drove it for a few miles today and that apparently fixed it!!

Hey my clutch went out in my 78 cj5. I was told to put a Chevrolet clutch back instead of a Jeep one. Not sure which one to put. Any suggestions?

BL- I can't help you on that one, but if you start a new thread with "Chevy clutch instead of Jeep" (or something to that effect), you'll get a faster response. Go back out to the main CJ forum section and look for the "new thread" tab.
