Im trying to buy new rims and tires, and was recommended that an 8" is better than a 10", unless running a beadlock type rim, was wondering if anyone has run this setup at one point or not. Planning on 35-12.50 on a 15X8 wheel. or 15x10 if necessary.

I've been running 32x11.50 BFG MT's on 15x10 steel rock crawlers for quite some time and no problems. The steel rims have safety beads on them. I had originally planned on running 33x12.50's and already had the rims. Then I came across a great price on the 32's. I have an 80 CJ-5 (narrow track). There is an improvement in road handling with the 10" rims which is why I run them. I know that 11.50's on 10 inch rims is not the best combo but it's worked for me so far. Ther's not much in the way of rock crawling here. If I was running 35x12.50's I would run 10" rims but that's me. It depends on what kind of wheeling you do.

I think people say 8 over 10 because tire sizes lie. With a 8 you can air down alot more with out risk of blowing the bead.

I run a 13.50 on an 8" rim. Many people run wider tires on narrow rims. It helps hold a bead when aired down better. Only thing to watch out for is watch the wear of your tire and adjust the pressure you run. A higher pressure will cause the center of the tread to buldge and wear faster. This is same for a normal width tire and wheel combo but more exaggerated on a narrower wheel and wide tire

So if I decide to run the 8, I'd need to run a few pounds under max psi to accommodate the differences and ensure better tread wear than at full psi?

best way is to chalk the tire drive down the road till you get a even wear and the chalk is gone

Chalk perpendicular across the tread I'm guessing?

rgr there is a few other ways too I think. I dont normaly go by the PSI on the side of the tire since it is normally a rating way past what my Jeep will ever weight.

I used to run with a 15X8 rim with 33X12.50's but with a narrow track I had to use spacers to keep them from rubbing the fender wells. I moved to 15X10's no spacers needed, no rubbing. My CJ stands better, looks proper now, and drives better and steers sharper. I will never go back to 15X8's. Just my $0.02

So it is better for a 8" rim as opposed to a 10" rim?

I don't have a narrow width axle. I have full length Dana 44's out of a 73-75 International Scout II.

I run a 35x12.5 on a 15x8 rim and I have no problems with it.

and since the length from one side of my drum to the outside of the caliper is roughly 13" I can run a 15" correct?
