Anyone ever use the Polyethylene replacement Tank

I've been thinking of installing one of these in my jeep and wonder if anyone had any problem with one.

Polyethylene Gas Tank and Other Jeep Parts and Jeep Accessories by 4 Wheel Drive Hardware

I was thinking of upgrading to the 78 and later filler on my 76.

The 21 gallon tank might be nice also but I don't think an extra $100.00+ for 5 gallons would be worth it for me.

A stainless or plastic oil pan would be nice also.

Comments? suggestions?

I'll be watching this thread too.. Mine just started leaking bad enough to start looking into a new one. Price isn't too bad either, considering I've paid just over $100 for a steel replacement for the Ranger and my F150 I had.. and the F150's started leaking a few years later, even with me using 3 cans of rubberized undercoating on it when I installed it!

I had a shop install one while the jeep was getting other issues fixed. They had a hard time installing the sending unit - didn't fit exactly right. I don't know if the metal tank has the same fitment issues or not. I'd probably get the metal one if I had a do-over; the sending unit might fit better.

I'm in the salt all winter so I need something that won't rust away in a couple of years.

I have the 2 gallon tank. No issues. If I had to do it again, I would go with the 15. The 21 hangs down a few inches, taking away from my decent angle. Took a good hit to the skid plate a few weeks ago. Good news is no dammage to the tank

I had an issue with my sending unit starting to leak. I tracked down the mfg and called them. I was thinking I needed a new gasket and the standard round profile would not work, so I was looking for their square one. Guy on the phone said the typical issue was that the tabs on the sending unit need to be bent in more vs. a steel tank. He sent me a gasket no charge and I have not had an issue since.

Thanks Brian. It does leak and I have been meaning to fix it. This will help a bunch.

I've had a polyethylene tank like that (got it from FWDH) in my CJ7 since 1993, and I have had absolutely no problems with it. I used the OEM fuel tank skid/mounting plate on it.

I picked up the 21 gallon poly tank (a few years back when I did my CJ's makeover), and I LOVE it. With the less than great gas mileage, it's nice to not have to worry on longer trips (camping & crusing the Blue Ridge Parkway).

As noted above, it does hang down some, but for me, I like it.

Later, T.J.

I did an under the seat tank on my 73. No worries about impact. I don't know how they would fit on the later tub. But they are only 10-11 gallons. If I remember right you can get right and left hand so technically you can put dual tanks in. Just a thought.

I put one on the silver Jeep I built up... I love the extra capacity as now I can go 250+ miles without refuleing, but it does hang down 3.5 inches or so... put enough lift on it and it might not be an issue...

I did a conversion about a year ago and it has been a great improvement. there was a thread about a week ago that has a some good pointers.

Questions about upgrading from 15gal steel to stock 20gal poly fuel tank HeepToJeep

I would note that the after market tank I got did not have a sock on the dip tube. I refitted all with an internal fuel pump including a sock. I think a sock is a good thing.

I also have the 21 gallon tank. The extra mileage I get really helps on hunting trips. The downside is that I ended up with a larger gap between the skid plate and where it mounts to the tub. No problem I am going to put a piece of sheet metal there.

The nice thing about these tanks is that if they take a hit they dont seem to get dented and damaged.

I havent ever regretted putting it in.

Some suggestions:

The poly tanks need a heat shield if closer than a few inches from the exhaust. Mine was close and a made a shield from sheet metal. I trimmed the metal and filed the edges, BUT the edges are still sharp and a hazard when working around that part the jeep.

If i had it to do again (and I will probably refit another time) I would suggest using old license plates. About the right size, (at least on mine) and the edges are not sharp.

Couldn't you roll the edge over?
