Any Ideas on how to do a custom dash?

I have an 81 CJ-7 with the stock gauges and switches. I want to do a custom dash with the following:

5" Tach
5" Programmable Speedo
2 1/16" Fuel Level
2 1/16" Fuel Pressure
2 1/16" Water Temp
2 1/16" Oil Pressure
2 1/16" Oil Temp
2 1/16" Volts

With all the switches like:

Head Lights
Aux Lights
Fog Lights
HVAC Switches

and two 6.5" speakers.

I have the orginal cj-7 dash in my jeep and it is great condition. ANy Ideas on how to accomplish my project?

Personally I think a 5inch tach is just tacky and ugly. And unless you're running a real high HP engine I'd think you can do without the oil temp and fuel pressure guages. I would recomend a voltmeter and if you have a later model CJ you might want a vacuum guage to see how your engine is running and maybe increase performance. I think you're trying to cram a lot into one dash but its not impossible. Depending on your fabrication skills you can easily fit all that in. I've seen one dash where the owner put the guages in front of him above the steering column and it looked really nice. If you're set on all of this you may also want to buy an aftermarket dash that is blank with no cutouts so you can put whatever you want wherever you want. Its not hard, you just gotta do all the work yourself.

What's wrong with a 5" tach

Cut a heavy piece of cardboard out with the same outside deminsions as your dash, Make some guage cut outs, out of similar stock and cut the cardboard dash out for the stearing colum etc. (The "have to be theres") Then take the guage cut outs and drive yourself crazy! RJR products offers a bright tread aluminum dash with just the comfort controls and lights, and stearing cut out for $251.66. I found some folks on E-Bay who'll sell one (bright tread) for about $150.00 I've got the layout that I want, I just have to get the dash!

My layout is VERY similar to the one above, but I'm going to get the "tilt" rings from autometer and tilt the guages towards me.

Later tater!

If you are in a decent sized city go to a metal shop. The shop I go to for all my welding materials has 4X8 sheets of diamond plate for $70. Regular steel is cheaper. If it were me I would buy a plain piece of steel (I would guesse no more than $30 or so if you forage through the cutoff and scrap bins), cut it to size and pay a fab shop $10 to toss it in the bender to make the desired lip. Then as someone mentioned, cut out with cardboard and play around to see what looks/works where.

Take a look here:

Look at his other items.

I bought a custom stainless dash from him, added one additional gauge opening using a bar cutter and one more hole for a toggle switch. These dash panels are very high quality. Stainless or aluminum = no rust. They fit perfectly and I thought the price was fair. If you were looking for something really custom you might check with him. (more $$)

Good luck.

I have a question.....has anybody mounted a tach outside their rig? I was thinking about mounting one on the hood in one of those cups....sealing it up with silicone rubber. Any recommendations?

I have chatted with this guy, seems to be on the up and up. I am considering all my options, but he is one of them for sure
