Any idea what this 'Jeep' actually is?
A guy from Thailand posted it on a facebook CJ page. At first glance it looks like a lot of body cladding, but after looking closer it seems as though the bottom and back end are from something else, and it's been frankenjeeped together:

Looks like a step side cj

It's a frankenjeep, for sure. Lots of mods there that it wouldn't have left an American factory with, if it did come from here in the US.

Interesting door openings, not sure why anyone would raise the cowl and hood either. It's definitely CJ based but from the looks of those rear fenders it might have a small pick up type box grafted on there (the tub rail line isn't consistent from front to rear). Is there any more pics of it?

Parts of it are Ssanyong Korando, mid to late 80s. Ssanyong made them from 83 to 96 and some made it to Thailand. They started as a licenced model of the CJ7.

Jeep CJs are rare as hen's teeth in Thailand. Whilst they were assembled elsewhere in ASEAN, the trade barriers were very much in place in the 70s and 80s and they did not make it to Thailand. You do occassionally find an ex US forces Willys up in the North East mixed in with all the Lincolns and Chevys left behind by US servicemen after the Vietnam war. Some were later given to the Royal Thai Army but the tend to get driven to death.

Jeep Cherokee XJs were assembled in Thailand from 1995 to 2001 and are quite common but the only soft top Jeeps to make it there were Wrangler Saharas from about 1999 to 2002, and that is not one of them.

Which leaves the Ssanyong. One of my friends looked at one a few months ago near Surat Thani but it had been fitted with a Toyota 1.5 4 banger, this one at least looks like it has a massive lump under a raised hood. it has had some major mods all over it but you can still see the leaf springs.

1989 CJ8 Overlander rebody by Ssangyong (Korando)

Those big ones are the Korando 9.

Your photos highlight that no matter how much you malign AMC interior trim, someone can do it worse.

Ssanyong also made the Ssanyong Chairman. It is a licenced version of the old Mercedes S class, the early 90s land barge. The later ones have refrigerated AND HEATED cup holders to keep your beverage of choice at the ideal temperature whilst schlepping to board meetings. There was a Ssanyong showroom near my house in Bangkok and I used to see these things just gathering dust, Thais preferring real status symbols not copies.

I don't know about AMC's cars, but the CJ interior trim is excellent. Spartan just like it should be.

if you like the CJ interior trim, great. I have AMC interior trim too!!

The time now is 04:20 PM.
