Another Weird Jeep Thing...
Some of us here are very familiar with the "tiny piece of skizzle" that gets trapped and blocks an Idle Air Tube causing all sorts of money to be spent on everything from Cam Chains to new Carburetors! Right???
Well the other day while tinkering with my CJ, I found a source for those little "skizzle" particles! I believe Mike Romain has observed some coming in through the Bowl Vent hose coming out of the Charcoal Canister that the Gubment had installed to protect the Hoot Owls? That source may be the most common, but I have found another source! Those CJ's (and Wranglers!) that are new enough to have the Pulse Air system have two large hoses coming from the exhaust system that run into the bottom of the Air Cleaner Housing. Well, it was about 35 Degrees when I was playing around with my Jeep and after it had been running for a few minutes condensation starting splattering out of the inlet where those tubes come into the Air Cleaner Housing. Those splatters of water were filled with little pieces and flakes of what I can assume to carbon particles. Guess where those pieces were splattering toward? There is a little port toward the front of the Carb that allows these particles to fall into a space connected to the Fuel Bowl. Sooooo.... Sorry for the long story, but here is another source for the cause of the dreaded "idle drip syndrome".... I removed those hoses from my Air Cleaner Housing and securely plugged the air cleaner to keep dirt and dust out! I connected the Pulse Tubes into one another to keep them preserved for the future value of my Cj. Bruce

Here in Canada CJ's are utility vehicles and I haven't seen any with the air tubes. The YJ's do have those tubes though and I know a couple folks that have been running with the air filter holes blocked with wine corks or one maybe has a fancy liqueur cork in his. They did this after the Nutter and a carb rebuild. All of them had a lot of junk in their carb bowls and mucked up idle tubes, so you might be onto something. I don't normally see them with the emissions working and I am usually the culprit for that... Most come to me to get 'fixed' or 'nuttered'.

I think it may be another piece in the puzzle that causes the carbs to get a bad reputation.

I plugged my YJ pulse air tubes with wooden dowels, but I like the fancy wine cork idea better. system was puking brown gunk into the air cleaner. I keep the whole system in place though to pass visual checks. none of it is actually working.

It sounds like your check valves have failed, there should be no condensation or air coming from these hoses. The pulse air system is supposed to take air from the air cleaner and push it into the exhaust system either just below the exhaust manifold or into the cat itself. Below the vacuum-actuated valve is the check valve on each hose. My 84's check valves had rusted out (along with the pusle air tubes and cat!) and I was getting all sorts of rust and junk in my air cleaner. I replaced the failed check-valves and everything appears to be normal again.

Things like this are why all of these weird problems are just now manifesting! When all of these systems were new or just 10 years old, there were few problems!!

Those black flecks do sound like carbon from the exaust pushing back into the air cleaner.
I'll second the check your check valves. |
