amc20 bearing question

When I got this cj the wheel bearings in the rear were bad. When I went to replace them I found that the race wouldn't fit in the housing properly. Very loose. I went ahead and put it back together so I could find out what else the jeep needed. Needless to say the bearing didn't last long. So is there any fix for this or is it axle swap time? This jeep is just a weekend fun toy for the family so I'd like to keep the cost as low as possible. Thank you .
