I just finished a complete rebuild of a AMC 360 for my CJ7. I got it starter, but the starter does not sound healthy when it engages the flywheel. Sometimes it spins without spinning the flywheel and when it does spin the engine/flywheel, it makes a strained mechanical noise. There weren't any shims when I took it out, but I am wondering if it has to be shimmed and how to do that correctly. Could the starter be bad and how could I see this?
I would be checking out the nose bushing on the starter. They are a big wear point and I have even gotten a 'remanned' starter that came with a bushing so bad my ring gear got killed.
As far as I know, shims move the starter away from the flywheel on a starter that bolts up to the engine so if it is draggy you need a shim. I think the AMC starters bolt into the tranny instead of up to the engine though.?
Oh also be aware that for some strange reason, freshly installed Jeep started like to just up and come loose. It is worth a check.... Just happened to me and another gent on this forum.
Thanks Mike. Not sure why, but I took it out and put it back in and it works much smoother. Only thing I can think is that the motor was a little loose.
i have shims on mine it is an autozone pos. but works great the starter position on mine is on the block . i would take it out and look at the teeth on the starter gear part and see where the contact pach/marks are .
AMC starters don't use shims. How did you manage that?
Fe2O3SUCKS, do you have a starter locator plate properly installed on the back of your motor? Also, Autozone starters are notorious for not fitting AMC engines well. If you have one, return it and get a different brand from a different store.

you are verry right . i like to not use autzone when ever i can.
crappy auto zone starter . wasent geting a good contact patch it was too deep some how ...(yes there not suppost to but in this case it did need it )
Thanks to all. I wound up replacing the old starter with a newer (good quality) one. Replaced the crappy battery while I was at it also to give it some good cold crankin amps. worked like a charm.
I also wanted to agree that there are no shims on the AMC starter. It bolts directly on so there isn't an adjustment.
Wow, I can't believe I wasn't the only who said this.
It usually starts out the cheap way, then problems and spend more money to do it correctly the second time.
Well, We all learn from mistakes I guess !
Glad to hear it's fixed !
Well I do like to use autozone. But, I purchased 4 different starters from Napa and autozone and none would fit.THey all relocated the hot wire to the side of the case. I had a starter that had the tab on the end. Nothing a mean green clockable starter couldn't fix.
