AMC 360 dipstick reading says overfilled, with 3.5 quarts....

As the title says, my dipstick says overfilled, but I know this engine takes at at least 5 quarts. I'm positive I drained out the previous oil, there were easily 5 quarts that came out. Any ideas?

Thanks

IS the dipstick tube all of the way into the block? You might check that first. Is it a factory dipstick or a aftermarket? I have an aftermarket that I need to remark because it is not right. My dipstick says full with 7 quarts in it and I know that is not right but I do run six quarts in it.

Yeah it is all the way in. I'm pretty sure the dipstick is stock, ill post a picture in a few though because I don't have anything to compare to, maybe someone can spot a difference.

I've had oil settle into the dipstick tube, probably where it bends at the bottom of the block. I've used light puffs of compressed air to clear it and then it reads correctly.

Dipsticks are interchangeable. It is entirely possible that the old one broke sometime in the past and the PO simply grabbed another off ???.
You can completely drain and refill the crankcase with the prescribed amount of oil. Then dip the stick and mark the correct level.
