AMC 232 head on 258?

I am going to do an engine swap from a 232 to a 258. I was going to get the short block for a 258 and use the rebuilt head thats from the 232 that i have. Will this work? How about the alternator, fuel pump and water pump (also new)? Thanks for Your Help.

Why are you getting rid of the 232??? That is what I have. I was thinking about rebuilding the 232 and seeing if a 4.0L head will work and what gains I will get.

The bottom end of the engine needs to be rebuilt so i would need to take the engine out anyway. Also my jeep is a 1979 CJ7 (didnt come with the 232) and the 232 is out of a AMC Spirit. I want to swap mostley Because i want to go back to what was originally in the jeep and gain some power along the way.

Heads are identical if it's an 80 or earlier 258 with 1/2" head bolts. 81 and newer had 7/16" head bolts.

Would be interesting to see how well a 232 with a 4.0 head performs as well as what kind of gas mileage you get.

What do you think I will gain??????

I am willing to try it, I just want to know if the 4.0L will fit the 232 block and work... I like the way the 232 runs now... if I could bump up the compression a little, get a little better flow.. it might work for me!

I would think the 4.0 head would work. The only difference between the 258 and 232 is the stroke. The 232 is a pretty economical engine as it is. I think those who have installed 4.0 heads on 258's gain in efficiency--power with no loss in MPG if I remember correctly.

Is the 4.0 head a direct bolt on or do you have to make some mods for it to fit a 258? Also what years of the 4.0 would work? Thanks

I have a manual here and it shows many of the same head casting numbers used for the 232 and 258, so I would say they are the same, other than the head bolt size already mentioned.

Also the 258 is only rated 10 hp higher than the 232, so I doubt you would notice much difference. Although, if the deal is right, I'd go for the 258. I just wouldn't jump hurdles to get one.

Google is a wonderful source for information on the 4.0 head swap. Just off the top of my head, some mods are required for the coolant passages and the intake ports/intake manifold to get them to line up. A 4.0 exhaust manifold must be used. There's more I can't think of at the moment.

The 258 head is a direct bolt on to the 232 short block.
