AMC 20 disc brake conversion

I have Googled the web AND JF for the answer and am unable to find the info.
I'm doing the disc brake conversion on my AMC 20 and my salvage yard only has the Maxima calipers (no nissan 300 zx). I assume the front and back calipers on the Maxima are the same because in all the write-ups no one mentions FRONT or BACK when they list these calipers in the parts list. The parts guy asked me "front or rear" I stammer for a bit and say "rear.....I think"
Any advice? Are they the same? Can I use front OR rear calipers from the 95-01 maxima?

Nope. Front & rear are totally different calipers.
Google is my best friend:

How do you come up with "they are totally different calipers" from any of those sites? I've googled, I've looked through every JF thread I can find on the subject, read through the link you sent (which was review cuz I've spent the last to days googling "amc disc brake nissan maxima etc etc) and still dont know if they are interchangable.

I'd check on RockAuto.com or something similar and compare part numbers for the front and rear maxima calpiers vs 300ZX vs whatever else might be interchangeable. If the numbers match, thats a good bet they are the same

The rear callipers have the parking brake built into them so thats what you want from the 300z. Some stuff I found

These are the ones I have been through with a fine tooth comb. I CANT use 300zx calipers, it's MAXIMA.

KICKINPROP; yea, that's the only thing I could come up with, comparing parts #'s.

Thanks both for the input.

The rear calipers on the maxima have the parking brake, you want the rear calipers.

johnnypac 04-22-2011 10:55 AM

I don't have, nor do I want the parking brake so that wasn't a part of the decision making process. I DID neglect to mention that though.

LT1CJ7 04-22-2011 12:08 PM

Okay ;)

johnnypac 04-22-2011 01:06 PM

nah, not refusing any of it but not interested in ur "Google is my best friend" crap. I've researched google. My question wasnt answered. I agreed with KICKINGPROP cuz that was the only good suggestion that came up. I'm looking to see if the calipers are interchangable. if ur not understanding the question, stop replying. And i have not seen on any of the write up's where it says "rear Maxima calipers" just 300zx and maxima rear caliper bracket. I responded that I wasn't interested in the ebrake because I want to know if I can use the FRONT CALIPERS that my junk yard has off of a mazima.

johnnypac 04-22-2011 01:08 PM

And you still have not answered me. I was wondering how you came to the conclusion that the calipers were "totally different" from that link you sent me. There is nothing on there that I found that says that.

jeepwhore 04-22-2011 01:23 PM

Considering most everyone that does this swap uses the rear calipers to have a functioning ebrake I think its safe to say you aren't going to find the answer you're looking for......those that don't want an ebrake usually opt for a disk swap with beefier and more easily sourced rotors and calipers (read: cheaper). So in short, why not set the precedent, go down to the wrecker and compare the fronts to the rears yourself and report your findings? If the front caliper fits on the rear caliper mount you have your answer......Or, and this is thinking way out of the box, just use the rear calipers and don't hook up the ebrake.....:D

johnnypac 04-22-2011 01:35 PM

Thats the conclusion I came to. The part #'s are different for obvious reasons (rear has ebrake) so that got me no where. comparing can't be done at the yard cuz they won't let me back there AND they don't have the rear calipers they only have the fronts. So i just need to buy them and take some measurements. Hoped that someone had already done that. Guess I'm the guinee pig. Ill take one for the team.

frodin1 04-22-2011 01:37 PM

NASTRA Part # 121219 front left NASTRA Part # 122467 rear left. 2 different part numbers. Lol. Wow, I'm pretty sure the fronts wouldn't have the e-brake mechanism on them.

johnnypac 04-22-2011 01:39 PM

JEEPWHORE. you mentioned those using a beefier set up easier to source prts (without ebrake). Ive never read anything on this. The only thing I've seen is the 300zx and Maxima (and caddy but have heard to stay away from those). Where can I find a write up or info on those?
