AMC 20 axle movement

While replacing the leaky seals in my rear axle we discovered, on the passenger side, a great deal of axle end-play. I could grab hold of the cap and just move it in and out. FYI we installed a lock-rite less than 600 miles ago.

As stated before, I can just grab it and pull it in and out.

Thanks

How far? All the way out?

1/4"? 1/2"?

One piece axels or stock? Was your brake backing plate still on there tight?

They're stock axles, there is about 1/4" of play. We tapped the bearing race all the way in with a screw driver which will cause the wheel cylinder to hit the lug nuts where they stick out of the back of the flange. The backing plate was very tight and looked fine.
