Altitude Wire

Hi Gang-

What exactly does the Altitude wire on my CJ do? I've read that you ground the wire to the engine block when you ride in elevations of 4,000 ft above sea level, but what gets adjusted or changed as a result? Timing? BBD Carb?

Funny thing is that when I put the wiring harness in my Jeep I originally grounded this wire by mistake. I thought it was just another ground. My house is only 50' above sea level, but the engine ran great anyway. Anyone know?
