alternator brown wire

I am curious about the brown wire that goes to the GM type alternator on my CJ7, I have the Mopar MPI kit and the kit strongly recommends putting a diode (?) in line with that wire to protect the engine computer. I recently found that the way the folks did it on my truck allowed the diodes solid core wire to break thus disconnecting the wire from the alternator. Yet everything still works Ok... So what does this wire do?!?! I cannot find a clear view of it in any of the wiring diagrams I have seen...

One side note; my alternator does like to charge at just in the green arc around 12v OR way up at the top of the green arc at 14v. I have been told that is normal but I wonder about that. sometimes my battery will seep from the caps. I don't think that is normal. Any input?

Thanks!!

Wow, great link thanks!

I did hook it up, no changes anywhere that I can see, I think I will check that diode....
