I calculated, based on the percentage used of the materials I bought, how much the tire carrier cost. With metal, paint, and welding wire, it cost me $45.68 not counting power. I over guessed the percentage of material used to make up for scrap and such. All in all, my goals of cheap and sturdy were more than met!

It probably took me 18-20 hours though D:

I like that logo a lot more. "tac" means a place to tack weld in order to mount it? Probably that's a bad guess

You nailed it! That's where I'd tack it into place.

20hrs X $3.45 per hr = $69.

Labor is always the big expense

Your tag should be designed so it could also be used as a gusset for corner bracing. Maybe an alternate shape? I liked the creativity of your first design over the 2nd, but I like the overall look of the 2nd design over the first. Does that make sense?

I feel the same way Scott. I'll keep trying till I get a good one. Well... The tags may not have turned out, but the tire carrier is officially done, and looks lovely! I cut a little strip out of the plastic securing lip on the back door of my soft top to make accessibility easier, and also so the CB antenna cord can exit that area. Otherwise the top rubs on the carrier when I try to flip that lip into the channel directly behind the carrier. I can grab that spare and seriously yank on it and it feels as sturdy as my MORE steering box brace. In fact the only give I can feel is in the panel on the jeep itself! I bet I could even jack the back end up by the spare! (Not gonna try).

Do us all a favor and post a picture of the beach before we freeze to death! The low on Saturday will be in the negatives with more snow.

Thanks guys! But let it be known I am but a mortal welder, The Lord himself holds the atoms together and guides my hand.

Also, thanks for the sunset pic! An oceanside sunset is hard to beat! What kind o tree is that!? It looks like an upside down umbrella tree.
