So I pulled the new 79 main jets and compared them to my old 80 main jets, and sure enough, the 79s are way way bigger. I was blowing raw fuel (I know, terrible) out of the pipe and I got about 3 miles per gallon.

Actually, it's a miracle I made it the 20 miles rounds trip back to the house. I got to wondering how the jets could be so different, the I took a real close look at the 80s, and it turn out they are 60s. Duh! Now I feel old.

I put the "60s" back in, along with some new NGK Vs, and I returned the timing to 8*-9*. We (the GF and the GFs brother and I) took her to olive garden, and then for a quick jaunt into the hills. She (GF) gets all scardy pants when I take her wheelin, an I only needed 4x4 in one spot, and I'm always going slow in first. She has no idea what she's up for heh...heh...heh

There is still a bunch of tuning that will happen over the next week. Then it's all about leak fixing, and alignment, and brakes, and smoothness

It's nice to be right about something at least once in a while.

Tonight, I put my timing tape on my harmonic balancer, and I ran a timing curve from 800 to 2600 RPM (with vac advance plugged of course). I had the GF verify RPM from the cab while I turned the idle adjust screw in to get the various RPMs.

I wonder if it's common for the timing marks on the timing cover to be off by 3 or 4 degrees. I set the timing to 8 tonight before the timing tape, and when I checked it against the timing tape, I was closer to 12 :/

I swear I got the diameter of the balancer right, and used the appropriate tape. And lined it up with the 0* mark.

Either way, it's at 8 according to the tape, and it goes to a little over 24 at 2600 RPM. The curve also kicks in kind of late, I'll lighten up a dist spring or two tomorrow.

I also slammed a set of 59 main jets in the bowl (60 previous), and that made a ton of difference, but I know it needs more. I've been tuning motorcycle arbs for a while, so I can usually dial in any kind of rich/lean mix or jetting by feel. I haven't dealt with timing before, so all that is new.

BTW, the chart should say timing* instead of "in Hg." It was late

I will make sure to look at that as I have never done timing or really anything with automotive engines. Only dealt with motorcycle engines too I will prolly have some similar problems since I have my engine all apart.

I had to take a break from my tuning thread to repair a leak from my timing cover. Also, I will be replacing my radiator, shroud, cap, bypass hose, and rad hoses.

I may also do my water pump while I'm in there. I'm not sure if I should do the timing set, I doubt that motor has 20k more miles on it, but judgment tells me to do it anyway.

I love your tinning thread by the way. I will be using it once I get to needing a good tune when she's running in a few months.
