Alien Speedometer or What's in your 79?

Looking to replace my 79 CJ7 speedo because I'm redoing the dash and the speedo chrome trim ring is way rusted.

Seems there are two replacement speedos available, one for a - to 79 model and one for 80-86 models.

Mine is a 0-90 speedo but it does not have the amp and oil idiot lights like the replacement and it also has the little plastic bezels for the turn indicators which the replacement does not. Mine also has the parking brake indicator (on the LEFT side) and something unknown on the right.

This thing looks like a cross between the up to 79 speedo and the 80-86 model but neither one is completely correct.

Is what I have correct for my model and the replacements are just generic and not model specific? Or did jeep slip something weird in on the last year before the changes in the 80 + models?

Thanks for your help with this

For the OEM Speedos, I've found 3 of the later large face types. One is mid 70s 0 to 90 mph. Second is early 80s 5 to 85 mph with up to 99,999.9 mileage and the 82ish on has a 6th place to read how many hundreds of thousand miles.

Notice the relationship of full and empty and hot and cold...aftermarket units almost always has these reversed.

Yes, yours sounds "correct". "Brake" light for parking brake OR prop valve indication of problem.....on the left side. Other side is the 4 wheel drive light. Top right is blue dot for high beam.

Thanks Ed, mine is the top photo, Thanks for posting. I'll have to rethink replacing it as neither aftermarket unit will be correct.

Also ssome of the replacement speedos are missing the light between the gas and temp gauges. Earlier ones are like that but I like the extra bulb to add more illumination to the gauges.

I'd actually would like to install on old IH speedo that is of simular size but has 4 gauges in the housing.

Like John has said, I replaced mine years ago and the lack of the one light in it make it so dark I can not see my speed in the dark.

Also the "4wd" light lights up as Emergency Drive, which I believe only came on in the models equiped with Quadra-Trac and not with manual transmissions. I've always wondered why they even put this there. Aftermarket prices typically run around $100. I've yet to find a replacement that is correct.
