Alarm system questions

Does anyone out there have an alarm system they would suggest? It is starting to get nice out and it will be strictly bikini top most of the time. I don't want to have to worry about my stereo system constantly. I am thinking about the viper 5901 with the proximity sensor and maybe the level also. Anyone have this system?

One last question, anyone have remote start on their cj? The system comes with remote start but I think that I might not connect it.

That remote start option probably isn't compatible with a carb engine. I'm sure with some modifications it could work but I believe most remote starts have to interface with the computer in order to intiate the start.

My general rule of thumb (even with a hard top and hard doors) is not to leave anything I wouldn't want stolen in the Jeep. I've been happy with a few Viper Alarm/Remote Start systems but I am not familiar with that specific one.

yea I agree about not leaving anything in there. I don't really leave it anywhere unattended. I am usually not far from it. What I like about this system is that it notifies you via a fob that you carry if the alarm has been triggered and it works up to a mile. If I am eating, having a beer or just walking around downtown I can go see whats going on. I also plan on making it difficult to get the speakers and radio out so I have a chance to get there before it's gone.

Only when I am not riding with my wife. When she's there she always makes me turn it down so we can talk.

I'm looking at getting an alarm for my jeep as well so I can leave the top off while I'm at work and be somewhat comfortable with that (I'm never more than 75 feet away from my jeep at work). Can you get the proximity sensor with any of the viper alarms? Anyone know of a good one to recommend?

I don't know how electronically inclined you are but I found the Viper 5901 on the internet for like $150 and $50 for the proximity sensor. I am at least going to attempt the install myself. Worse case scenario, if I can't figure it out I take it somewhere and they can do it. If you go to the Viper website you can see what is compatible with what.

I own a Glock security system, and I'm always excited when I get to use it!

Many of us have figured out a radio is one of those fancy frills and gimmicks that doesn't belong on a vehicle that really can't be locked up very well.

I go for the minimalist approach. No radio and nothing visible to steal. Even the CB hooks into the cigar lighter and a hidden antenna cable. If it's not in use, it's not plugged in. And my Jeep is never locked; the soft top is too expensive to keep replacing. I'd rather have the lowlifes scrounge around and find nothing than cut the top open and find nothing.

There IS a battery disconnect and a locking hood latch though.

YES, Ive used VIPER systems and really like them. I mounted my sensor under the lid of my console and wired it all up myself. Walk within a few feet of the Jeep and the horn honks every few seconds if you stay in that zone, reach in or cross the doorway and dual sirens go off. Also on the 6 tone sirens, I cut out the first 2 loops so my alarm immediately sounds different then others.

^^^This "you're in my zone" approach^^^ wouldn't go over very well where I live. Vehicles are parked too close together here for an "approach warning". People here would tire of it almost immediately and you'd be inviting vandalism.

People here are kind of strange; most wouldn't even think of bothering another's vehicle, but tell them you're in my space and you'll get, "No, you're in MINE!" for a reply.

I'm in the "cheap stereo" camp as well. Can't hear it over road noise past 20 mph anyway.

One last question, anyone have remote start on their cj? The system comes with remote start but I think that I might not connect it.

On the remote, besides the carb issue, if a standard tranny, that's an issue. You wouldn't want it to start in gear....

I left my Jeep unlocked and they still cut the soft top. They stole my radio knobs (the radio was the old kind that mounted from the back and you had to drop the AC to get to it). I had nothing else in there.
