Advice on alternator voltage ...

I need some help with electrical, we just replaced all our cables with welding cable and nice copper crimp on ends, installed a new alternator, and I ran new grounds. Battery is about a month old. (As per Jeephammer instructions, I have not added the Radio Shack Diode yet). But when testing, (using a battery charger with alternator check), we are getting a alternator voltage bad reading. I'm not exactly sure where to go with this first....Would the missing doide cause this reading ?

Any help appreciated, thanks
