This is an older pic, but this was all the crap that I fought when taking the body mounts off. There's only 4 intact bolts in the picture because the other 7 either snapped off or were cut off and still attached to the tub.

Nice repair work, Adam! I agree completely, that we'd be lost without cutting wheels!

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but what welder are you using on the sheet metal, and what settings seem to work best?

Your welds look a lot cleaner than what I've been able to achieve with my Lincoln 140 MIG welder.

You did better than me. I was only able to get 1 bolt out. All the others either stripped, twisted, or snapped off. The hardest two were the ones on the crossmember above the gas tank. Not much access for the sawz-all.

Here's my set-up, Lincoln Handy Mig with shielding gas. I only use Lincoln .25 wire from Home Depot, better than the Harbor Freight wire in my opinion. It's a total budget/starter welder, but the thing just works like a champ, so easy to use. It has 4 heat settings, and I usually have it set at Low/2 for thin metals, and either High/1 or High/2 on the thicker stuff. Kind of depends on how big of a gap I have between repair patches. The welder's rated up to 1/8" steel, but I think it can go a little thicker. I wouldn't use it on making custom bumpers or anything, but it's strong enough for any frame repairs, and perfect for sheet metal. I got it on-line from Home Depot, check out the link for all the details.

Lol, so a little spit and shine won't make these as good as new? Darn, I was hoping to save a few bucks by re-using all this stuff. Fortunately the two above the gas tank came out the easiest for me.

Need some advice.

I'm trying to decide between rubber or poly body mounts?

I'm leaning on getting the rubber because I've heard they ride a littler softer. Any truth to this?

Adam,

I just replaced my worn-out original rubber mounts with poly, and can honestly say I didn't notice a bit of difference.

I think the suspension has more to do with ride quality than the material of the mounts.

I would tend to think the rubber ones do give a slightly softer ride, but I don't know if it's enough to be a factor. I decided to go with the poly ones with an extra inch built in, mainly for their durability and resistance to the elements. They outlast the rubber ones. Mine were still the originals and between them and their mounts, both were shot so I won't even be able to compare the two once mine is together.

I've been contemplating whether or not I needed to cut out my pillars. Turns out that it was a good decision to do so.

Doesn't look too bad from here, and there's no rot/holes on the exterior sheet metal:



You can already see the crud falling out just from cutting out the spot welds.



Underside:



Yikes, much worse than I expected. Definitely a good decision to pull them.



Sand blasting/cleaning up. The upper section wasn't as bad as it looks in the previous image, mostly surface rust. There were a few spots here and there where the metal was thinned out a bit so I hit those spots with my welder.



As you can see, no signs of rot on the exterior metal. Wouldn't have been long before rust bubbles started showing up though:





Outer patch:





Turned out nice. I also filled in all the screw holes from where the diamond plating was installed.





Cleaned up, sand blasted, and cut out the bad metal on the pillar.



Patched up pillar



Painted on some Por 15 to the backside of both areas and welded everything back together.



Now I have to get to the other side.
