Adam's 1979 CJ5 Frame-up

Hey everyone! I've been a long time forum lurker, and just recently started posting. I bought my CJ5 about 6 years ago when I lived in Seattle, WA (I'm in California now). The CJ was basically bone stock with the original/factory 258 and T18A/Dana 20 tcase, Dana 30 up front, AMC 20 with the factory Trac-Lock limited slip in the rear, and the factory Cumberland Green Metallic paint.

Over the years I have done a few minor improvements such as the team rush ignition upgrade, mc2100 conversion, new tires and rattle canned stock wagon wheels, rattle canning parts here and there, added a factory tach to the dash, and other general vehicle maintenance work (plugs, wires, new water pump, brakes, etc).

Year after year I've always toyed with the idea of tearing the jeep down and fixing it up. Problem is, I've always enjoyed driving it too much to make that big decision. Not to mention that the jeep runs well, looks fairly well, and is for the most part mechanically sound. However, underneath just about all my body panels lies a lot of rust and quite a bit of rot.

So I am about 1 month into the build and need to play catch-up with posting my progress and pics.

These will be my before pics:

Looking forward to input/suggestions and such along the way.

Fast forward a few weeks after a lot of PB blaster, broken nuts and bolts, cuts/bandaids, and here I am with the tub off and getting ready to prepare and repair the rotted out areas of my floor boards.

I thought you were just going to patch a rust spot? You're out of control!

Haha, well that one rust spot fix turned into a major overhaul.

I'm not even up to date on my pics yet either.

The life and times of us CJ owners! Take it apart and oh the many things one can find that need fixing. Have fun with it and post plenty of pictures.

A seemingly routine repair reveals another issue. That repair uncovers another problem, but to fix that problem you must also repair this problem. And since you have that apart, now would be the proper time to address this issue, which requires you to simultaneously replace this part . You have now entered.... the twilight zone.

Good luck with your journey. Post lots of pics, especially of your sheet metal repair. I'm about to enter that portion of my build.

Lol, so true!

I actually just started on some of the sheet metal repair and should be posting some pics of that fairly soon.

This rear, under seat storage box was the cause for the floor rust and rot:

Rear floors sanded down to bare metal in preparation for steel patchs:

Removed the heat shield underneath the rear floor plan so I can prep the back side of the metal for welding (spot welder bit from Harbor Freight).

wow, looks like a lot of work ahead for that tub. I really like that green color, are you planning to go back with it?

How do you plan on attacking that bed? I have a lot of similar small rust pinholes in my bed that sandblasting was kind enough to reveal for me. I was going to try and plug weld these while holding a copper "spoon" behind it, then grind the top side flush. I may also just cut some metal to fit between the ribs on the underside and then just plug them using that as a backer. Whichever proves easier!
My heatsheild is pretty bad on the one side so I was just going to make another one.
