I have an 81. When I swapped in the 304 I just re-used the cable from he 258. I had to make the holes in the bracket that bolts to the intake a little bigger so everything would line up but it worked.

I had read that the 258 cable is too short, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me. I am at the same point in the swap, but just measuring it looks like it will fit. I have the bracket with the square hole, but haven't tried the fit yet. I will tonight. If it fits, the I will post back. My cable is for an 85

I'm not sure what measurements you are looking for, and I realize I have a CJ7, but here are some measurements if they do you any good.
The first pic is a 258 measured from the square mount hole to the linkage.
Second pic(red) is the 304. Looks like my cable will work on either engine.
The cable itself measures the same 5 1/2" when fully extended.
I'm thinking you can order one to fit an 85 CJ7 and it would work. I'm not 100% though!

I have a 78 cj7, AMC 304 with a MC 2150 carb and just replace the cable. The part comming off is part number 5357931. If your 85 cj5 is the same as my 78 cj7, then this is probably yur part. The web serch on the 5357931 indicates it is 18.75 inch long.

Of note, i did not replace witha 18.75 cable. I think the issue1 is the travel allowed in the cable from the square lock , in and out. For the MC 2150 it about 3.75 inch. Issue 2 is the attachments on each end. Your probably have the standard 1/4 ball joint on the carb. As does the above referenced. the attachment on the foot peddle end is a 1/2 inch "key hole" circle, with a small slot below that allows the cable end to attach to the foot peddle. I describe it because i do not know what you have on your foot peddle. Both ends have the pressed in 1/2 in square hole with a plastic lock, one on the carb bracket the other through the fire wall.

Of note, I did not replace with the standard 18.75 in cable, but a longer cable that was less "crimped" but still had the 3.75 in travel (in and out) and had identical ends for attachments. and square hole lock for each end. My new cable part number is Pioneer inc, CA-8512

hope this helps and is not confusing. easy for me then see and type it out but maybe not for you to read and see. . Seems the important things are the 3.75 in travel (in and out) and the attachments for the foot peddle.

I just ordered one from napa for a late v-8 CJ it was 18+ " forget the exact dim but the 18.75 sounds likley.
With after market intakes you will have to alter bracket on the intake.
Napa only had one cables listed for each, long for the six and the shorter for the v-8

I did a cross check on the 0321771611, and you are correct, to shows to be the 35.375 in cable for the 72 cj5, with a 304 (i thought it might be for a I6.) I just cant see it being that long for the V8 engine. Therefore, I suggest you measure the one you have now to see how long it is. As I noted above, having just changed the cable, the 18.75 inch is the length of the cable I took off of my 78 cj7. 304. I would not think there would be that much difference between the 72 and the 78 but was some big changes going on in those yers. Just measure your cable and see what the length is.

I agree! That is way too long. Could be a typo?
I finally got my engine in, and the stock cable for a 258 is about 6" too long.
13 to 14 in. seems about right.
