I've seen some Alaskan Postal jeeps, CJ-8's, but i'd like to see some cool pics of a lower 48 postal. Anyone have some pics to post?
You can see pics of my P.O.S. postal here http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/74-dj-499094/. Hopefully you'll realize why I want the CJ5 tub. Plus I thought it would look cool.

rokcrawler... It never ceases to amaze me what you guys start with before a restore. That thing is falling apart! Nice graffitti. White on white, shiek!

Maybe I am geek, but postal jeeps just have a coolness factor. That cab is just plain hip.

Anyways... enough of that...take good pics, I'll be following the thread. Good luck.

My friend is a postal employee and bought one of there "restored" jeeps about a year ago, at the time they only had 2, the one on there main page and another one that he bought but it looks the same minus the large mirror on the fender. I put restored in " because they didn't do much more than repaint it. The jeep became unreliable about 2 months ago and he had to buy a RHD XJ. The strange thing about it was they rhino lined the interior in gray and did the roof and cowl in white rhino lining. They do sale alot of hard to find parts for DJ's, we had to call them on quite a few time to get part numbers for stuff because the local auto parts store don't have DJ's in there databases. Other than that he wont buy anything from them anymore, the spedo cable self destructed and he had to get a new one which cost $100 and it didn't come with all the parts it was supposed to and didn't work when installed with the old parts, he called them and they said he must have lost the parts and when he insisted that he didn't lose the parts they said he was lying.

I've got a similar project in mind, the wife bought a '73 DJ (yes, she is postal), my job is to make it functional. So far I've learned that the postal body is too heavy for real off roading, not a real problem for me. Seems like any CJ5 axles will fit it, and finding space for the t-case with the automatic trans could be a problem. Am I correct?

This thing will be used for delivery, though she usually gets to run in one of those ugly, can't get out of it's own way, LLVs. So it won't see a lot of road time, but I'd like her to stop using our Buick as a mail truck. And, with a 4wd DJ, she shouldn't get stuck in the snow.

Classic and fuctional, it is a Jeep after all.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I didn't quite do a "restoration" on my 74 DJ-5 but I can give you advice if you plan on changing out the engine/trans. I swapped the worn out 232 with a 383 SBC and TH350 and use it as a dirt cheap hot rod . As was previously mentioned you can use any transmissission that bolts to the 304,401, 232, 258, and 4.0 engine. Just something to consider would be learning to use a stick with the left hand . IF you want to slap a CJ5 body on you have a great base since the DJ frame is boxed in a lot of places and the springs are mounted outside the frame rail. The D44 that comes with it should have a trac-loc differential in it and 3.07 gears. If you already knew all this I apologize for useless information.

edit: jkirby74 if you want to use it for 4x4 you will probably have to have the rear diff moved to align with the transfer case since the stock diff is pretty close to centered on the axle

I'm looking at a '72 DJ5 it's got a 327 with an auto trans.

My question is did anyone convert their DJ to 4WD?
Would the Axle from a cj-5 be a bolt in swap?
It's already been converted to left side drive.

With a 327 and an auto tranny with the stock rear end, options on a t-case to make it happen? Or a tranny and t-case to make the swap?

"My question is did anyone convert their DJ to 4WD?"

I second that question.

Also, like mine, I've noticed that just about everyone else's DJs are rusted out horribly. Anyway to stop that?

Okay, I'm done hijacking.
