IMO it all depends on the level if diagnostics. In 96 I think the level is quite low. And if the AW4 is hydraulically controlled like the older RH transmittions are from mopar not much will be lost.
May be a code for a open lock up clutch solenoid circuit. Easily faked with a dummy load.......as an example.
96 in most respects were still the time of single board controllers. The didn't start butting modules everywhere till closer to 2000. Then their could be a dash, each door, body, etc.....
A fsm for that year and model will tell all.
