'86 CJ7 Steering and Frame questions

Hello everybody,

I have been a long time lurker/reader of the forum.

I have a 1986 CJ7 4.2L T176/D300, D30 Front, AMC20 Rear w/ one piece axles. I bought it 10 years ago while in college with a 4in lift and 33's, and the tub had been gone through and repaired rhino lined and painted. the engine was rebuilt two owners before me. I used it mainly as my summer vehicle which involved around town and some two tracks. My last semester was a fall semester and I wheeled it a little more. Two things ended up happening, steering box started leaking pretty bad, and the front grill support rusted through and broke out of the frame.

Fast forward to now, after starting my own business out of college, then switching to work for another company it sat in my parents barn until this last year where i was able to get it to my house, still with the same issues. To compound the issues one the PO's welded in the steering box at all the bolt holes and a brace across the front.

Now i have electrical skills but do not have the means to fix this, at least not in my garage. What do you guys recommend, taking it to a shop to get these things repaired, look for a used frame in good condition and swap everything over, or look at something like a TDK frame?

You didn't mention the frame being bad anywhere else so too swap that out due to the steering box issue would be an expensive and time consuming remedy that I would save till last. The grille mount area can be cut out and replaced. Where exactly did he weld, the box to the mounts or the mounts to the frame? Pics would help Can things be cut off, because a mount and another box would be cheaper and quicker. The factory mount sucks anyway. Is the brace welded to the pass. side frame?

So here are some pictures. It is welded both on the frame at the bracket and through the holes for the bracket. It also appears to have a broken off bolt. There is also a welded on cross member for support. Also I've had to drill and tap larger the skid plate holes. But for the most part it is in OK condition.

I would get yourself a new HD mount such as one from M.O.R.E., a new strg. box, and maybe a bolt on brace. Then take it to a shop that can cut the old stuff off, drill and tap new holes, and patch the front crossmember.
