83CJ7 Manual Steering Box "REBUILD"

Pardon me but I'm new here.
I've searched for a couple of days now and have yet to
find a thread where someone has rebuilt their manual steering box
for a 83 CJ7.
I'm down to the wire on funds for a while and can't afford a new one
but I can swing the $75.00 for the rebuild kit.

Anybody, Please, have you any experience or know of someone that
has built one using the kit???

thanks,

JP

I bet if you ask you will find someone here on JF that will give you a manual box for postage!

I have never rebuilt a steering box before.

Probably post it in the parts wanted section for starters and then monitor your thread here for replays also

I have a 79 CJ5 304 that I am getting ready to change over to power steering. I have all the parts and should have time to start in the next week or so. I am not sure if my old manual one will fit yours but I am sure some one will jump in and let us know. It is in great condition. PM me.

Thanks again guys. Looks like I'll have to rely on this thread only as I'm not
a full member yet; I can't afford it yet...

kponytail, I'm interested if it works.
Mine has some slack and there's no room for any more adjustment. It bugs me
ya know...
PM sent

Looks like they interchange. same part #994509
Is yours tight and have you ever adjusted it? Good indicator would be the center allen bolt sticking up past the locking nut on the top of box... Is it level with the nut or is there some sticking out above the nut?
How much you want for it?

JP

JP I should be home around 1pm and I will take a picture for you, meanwhile here are a couple I had on photobucket. I have never ajusted it or done anything to it, but after I bought the jeep I only drove it for a couple of weeks before I tore into it for a full restoration. It also has a new drop pitman arm on it now, I dont belive that will fit my new power setup.

I looked back to the add that the PO had and he said he replaced most of the front end steering parts before he sold it to me, but there is no mention of the steering box. It still has the metal tag on it so I would assume it is still original. I can say the jeep was in great condition when I got it.

Nice pics! Certainly is clean.
Have you removed it yet? I've heard that some of the bolts
can give you fits!
How much you need for it?

regards,

JP

still looking for that someone that has done a rebuild

Anybody?

I'm going to do my ball joints this week-end. Going with Moog. After that
I'm broke for a while...

A friend of mine fabricated a brace for the steering box and that helped a bunch. There were 2 bolts that were slightly loose that would not tighten
back up plus the normal give in the factory bracket. I may be able to get him
to fab a better bracket for me or maybe weld up the factory one.

Close this tread if you like

Well we tried.
Looks like no one has done a rebuild of a steering sector.
And no one has one in good shape that will send it for postage.
This is about the last thing I need to do to the front end to make it
better. Oh, it drives OK, but it's that little bit of slack I want to get rid
of.

If I ever buy another I certainly know what to look for and check out.
Had I known what to look for this time it certainly would have saved me about 2K...

thanks to all,

JP
