82 Scrambler Auto to Manual Swap

Hello,

Well I did a search and while I found a little I didn't get what I was looking for. Maybe I suck at searching.

I'm currently putting a new 258 in our CJ8 and I've decided to swap it to a manual. I've found a 4spd tranny/transfer case complete out of an 84 CJ for the swap. I'm going to be talking with the person selling the stuff this evening to see what else he might have I can use. I'm just curious what is different as far as driveshaft lengths from the etc. from the auto to the manual.

I know I'll need a shift linkage, flywheel, clutch, etc but I'm curious if I may be able to reuse anything like driveshafts, speedo cable etc.

Any help would be appreciated and I'll take pics and post info as I do it to help future people who do a search and have trouble like I did.

Thanks in advance,
Leo

You'll need to ID what you're getting. From my understanding, T-5 and T-999 drivetrain works out very close, dunno what the difference is with the T-4 or T-176 (those would be the 4 speed options). Might want to peruse www.jeeptech.com to see if you can find the specs for the trannies in question and do the math.

I'll check that out. Thanks!

I should have a complete rundown on the Tranny etc. tonight. The price was right at about $100 for both the tranny and transfer and the guy lives 10 minutes from me! He had quite a few parts listed so I may get lucky and get most of what I need from him. We'll see.

There have been quite a few people who'd do a complete swap with you, who want to go the other way.

Why...I like manuals and it's not a hardcore offroad vehicle. I just think manuals are more fun. We usually just use it to haul trash to the dump and get around in the winter. Our stable consists of RWD sports cars so it's our Utility Vehicle and a cool on at that! I wheel it a little here and there. Quite simply I'm a manual person I'd rather shift.

Besides, if I want to do some hardcore wheelin I'll just use this....

Post it over on http://www.cj-8.org/index.php . Several have commented that they'd like to do this. Your location will help a lot.

After years of working the clutch in the rocks and trails, I do think a Jeep should be a standard, trust me when I say it is fun, but the older I get I like the automatic, click and go, less work and better in my trails and traffic. If I got a really nice classic, I would probably keep it manual.

Post it in the wanted section. WTT.
