82 CJ7 Power Steering Problem

I have a 82 CJ 7 with super swamper tires. I have just finished a complete rebuild. I expect the power steering to have more ground resistance with the super swamper tires. However, I have decent power assist when turning the wheel for a left turn. When making a right turn, It feels like I have no assist at all.

With the front wheels off the ground, I can turn the wheel both directions with little steering effort.

WHy is the PS turning left easily and no assist on a right turn.

I tried to search, but I am on a 24.4K dial up and simply the internet is to slow to search.

It's probably either air in the system, or you may need a new gear box.

Good luck,

Matt

With high confidence, there is no air in the system. How do you prove the steering box. Its a expensive item to replace....if thats not the problem. If it was the box, why would it steer normal in one direction and almost no assist in the otehr direction ? I would think if the box was bad, it woudl be hard steering in both directions ?

The pump can't tell direction, it just pumps, so not the pump.
The problem will lie inside the steering gear.
The bore is worn where the rack/piston rides.
It moves up/down the bore; the seals or worn or bore is worn or both.
This is why the direction of turning the wheels is involved.

New steering box time.

Had you driven the Jeep with this gear prior to the rebuilding of the Jeep?
Any prior problems?

Thanks for the info, I understand.

I bought the Jeep DOA, never drove her. Did a rebuild and took it for a drive today and found the hard right steering.
