'82 CJ7 304 idle WON'T settle down

Hey guys just joined, wish I had this when I had my '76 CJ5!!

Here's the problem....... I just picked up an '82 CJ7 with YJ tub conversion already done. I'm trying to get her up to a "rolling" project!

304 eng
Motorcraft 2100 carb
stock disrtbr and ignition system

I got it close to being road worthy and found out Alt wasn't charging batt- had to do Jeephammer's diode fix(THANKS by the way)

I get it running in the garage idling great and test drive stumbles on acceleration. Then if idle is TOO high runs great on the test drive. Chalked it up to carb issues.

last night got it to where I was happy on both ends. This morning drove it to the train station (about 3 miles) halfway there idle shoots WAY up again and can't get it down. I have noticed that the #1 plug wire is almost 180deg out from the vac advance!!

I know alot of these questions come up, I'll try and get any request info out as soon as I can.

-Should I pull the distributor and install it 180deg back as per the diagrams in the manual?
-and then start with timing-then carb?
-I don't think the PO installed a voltage reg, would that contribute to the problem?

Thanks for ANY help!! I'm sure I'll be back!!
