With all the stuff breaking on my jeep I need something to look forward to and I think I want round partially or fully recessed led tail lights. I'm thinking of two red ones ( tail brake turn) and below and offset inside towards the tail gate putting the same type but white as reverse light. I saw some on gen right for about 25 a piece for the white and the red for 60 a set which is in my price range. I REALLY like the all in ones but they are a bit pricey. SO PLEASE post pics of your round tail lights on your 7s so I can get an idea. Thanks
this is what I am thinking about putting in mine. I want oval cus everyone else uses round...... I like the clear looking ones, I have them in my service truck, love them. I have the clear strobes in the service truck, also. Bright as hell !!
These ones are from a truck stop. $30 for the pair. Picture doesn't do justice to these. They are bright RED. I used (2) 2" white ones on the bumper for the reverse.
I'm actually looking for "all in ones" too. I ran into a guy on the trails one day that had round ones, a thick outer ring that was running/park lights, the center was brake/turn with a scattering of "park", and the two were separated by a band maybe 2 or 3 LEDs thick of white, for reverse. Looked awesome! He said he found his on ebay one day and I've been looking for some like this ever since.
Here is how I did mine. LED taillights off Ebay that use a flange mount instead of the rubber grommet. Bolt/screw on with three screws. Stainless steel trim ring is separate piece. Backup light is a Hella 55w. It is mounted with a quick release pin and wire connector so pulling it off to get to the spare is a 10 second deal. It is wired to a relay controlled by the back up light switch on the trans. I have a YJ tub, so I used the original third taillight contacts in the tailgate to power the back up lamp.
The pic without the tire shows a dual bulb Hella light. The pic with the tire shows a slightly smaller single bulb light also by Hella. I tried the smaller light because I had it laying around, and think it looks a little "cleaner", and didn't really give up much in the way of illumination.
I haven't been impressed with LED backup lights-- while they serve to "keep it legal", I've found that a good backup light is often worth it's weight in gold during night time recovery operations, and are often more useful than "extra" front mounted lights.
About the relay question-- The beauty of LED lights is their low amp draw (and extended life, and quicker "light up") . They draw less power than the incadescent taillight bulbs they replace. The already-in-place factory wiring will power them with no problem. You may have to use a different flasher-- the low amp draw will make them flash slower, or not at all.
The reverse lights are also hooked to a toggle on the dash. I have the info on these in my jeep thread. You can find it through my profile if you find any interest.
Titomars, I like those (no hacking etc.) but wow, 180 bucks!
I'm doing a old school build (OD & black) and would like to keep the look. Galt- yours are sweet but the look might be to modern unless the have different models.
Yeah it took me a quite a few months to pull the trigger for them. I am glad I did though. My back up flood light under the hitch works off an old 2 speed axle switch on my shifter. The regular B/U lights are wired stock.
Those are sweet, I've been drooling over them for a while now. However the link you posted up is just for the lenses. It's $185 shipped for the whole setup.
I didn't install the actual light. The previous owner did. I re-wired the dash and added the additional on/off toggle switch to them.
I can pull one loose and check it though if you like.
It's funny, ever since I first saw a conversion to round trailer style tail lights (even before LEDs became popular) I thought that the round style was how they SHOULD have been from the factory.... to each their own... but keep in mind, the original CJs had round tail lights, the rectangular ones didn't come in until what, 1972?
Go figure. I always thought "Real Jeeps" were the ones from 1942-1975 that had round tail lights. Lets see, 33 years of round tail lights versus 10 years of rectangle, which one is more "real" ?
i think its all about preference and if it looks at least halfway decent. i agree with you though, im all about tradition. i for one dont like those litedot round ones and those rectangle ones because they are way to expensive, and they stick out to far.
I found some at Lowe's that are rectangle, LED, submersible, and lower profile than my stock lights for about $50 for the pair. They are supposed to be for trailers, but I think they are pretty cool. If I had an extra $180 I'd get the round flush mount lights, but these other ones will do for now.
