79 CJ7 Questions
I usually join forums after I buy or have new interest, this time I figured I should join first and ask questions, BEFORE I buy.
I am looking at a 1979 CJ7. It has a V8, automatic transmission and I have been told all time 4x4. Lots of rust but but it is all hidden. Soft top in very good condition, I am sure it is new. New carpet, new wheel flares and new wheels and new Swamp tires (33") The front steering gear box is leaking fluid pretty bad and almost no brakes. Power steering feels like there is no power steering and for the most part, everything else seems to be ok. Run really good, etc. My question is, what is this worth, how much should I expect to pay to fix or replace the steering box?

I would guess 2800 to 4500 with out detailed pics and engine condition.
power steering would cost around 400 to 1000 depending on if you went stock or upgraded to higher end components thats accounting for a new gear box new pump and new lines. |

Thanks. He is actually asking $3500, but he wants to do some bartering. I own a computer business and he is willing to trade for a computer/monitor, etc. and I am guessing some money to boot.
This would just be a toy and project to mess around with, although I am not that good with that stuff. |

That is a CJ's worst enemy. What do the floor boards look like under that new carpet? Also check the inside rear frame rails right at the rear shackle mount. You'll have out of pocket expense to fix the steering and brakes. If it's a rust bucket it may only be worth $1500~2000.
We really need some good pictures of this thing.

I will post some photos. The rust that worries me the most is under the hood on the fire wall beneath the steering column. I will get some good photos tomorrow and post.
But this helps a lot, the guy wants to get rid of it and I think he will take less and I need some good numbers like this to go to battle. Need to subtract for all of the defects. I know it is a 79 so I didn't expect much, but don't want to buy a problem. |

Hello from Roanoke Rapids...
3500 seams a little on the high side to me (without seeing it and with the given info). I heard a guy is looking to sell a CJ in RR, but I don't know anything about it

He was asking $1500, then he went and bought wheels and Super Swamper tires and jacked the price to $3500. I told him to take them off and I could go buy something cheaper.
I basically just want a play toy to go to the beach on probably once per year and maybe do a little hunting and playing. It is really fun to drive. Last edited by TheLazyC; 06-10-2009 at 08:07 PM.. |
