79 CJ 5 W/304 smog

I am looking to buy a 79 CJ 5 W/ a 304. The problem is here in CA it needs smog. The owner took it off and threw it away. Can any one help with what I need and is it worth the trouble for $3500. Thank You

I'm sure plenty of people probably have their AIR pumps and crap sitting on shelves, but we're going to need some specifics on what's missing. Show us a picture of the engine.

I live 2 hours north in Willows. Thank you though. I just got a few pics from the guy though. If this will help any on finding the parts. A guy told me $900 for all the parts. Would you guys make this trade or just bail now. HELP.

Welcome to the club!

I purchased my 76 304 two years ago and even though most of the smog stuff came on the motor, the jeep wouldn't pass smog.
The reason was the PO installed a edelbrock manifold and some other crap.

The solution costs $1200
Howell TBI. Certified CARB California emissions legal.
I had to change the edelbrock for a stock manifold wich added costs but my jeep passed smog with flying colors after the install.

Good luck,
Rich

No doubt. Welcome to CA. This was a wrecking yard that is just jeep. Is there any one in CA or else where that might have the parts for less?

Get as much visibility as possible and post a thread in JF's Wanted Forum. Just be general about it, stating you need the complete emmissions equipment for a 79 with a 304 if anybody has it collecting dust in their garage.

Yea im having the same problem you are right now, only I have a 81 cj7. I brought it over from Arizona, where it didnt need to be smogged. Now that I have it back in CA though, I need the air pump and everything else. But just like rich-allen , Im going with the tbi kit from howell. Why spend so much to get the original smog equipment for a carb, when you can get a tbi kit.
