Ran across a 79 cj-5 renegade with a 258 today for sale. Noticed that it does not have a tailgate. The body tub is all one piece and the tub appears to be original.Did jeep make cjs with no tailgate and also is there any way to confirm that is a real renegade? Thanks!
There was a thread a few weeks ago on the whole tailgate/no tailgate body tubs. Try Search?
I bought my new 76 CJ-5 in May of 76, it had the tailgate as standard, the solid back was an option/standard on the Renegade. That being said, my CJ-5 had ALL of the Renegade items on it, 304 V8, Levis Interior and Top, Padded Dash, Sport Steering Wheel, Chrome Rocker mouldings, Fender Flares, and get this, the side mounted spare. The only thing it did not have was the solid back. I wanted the solid back, but this one was sitting on the showroom floor and was exactly what I wanted except for the one option. The dealer said since it was the end of the 76 production cycle, they could not guarentee me getting a 76 like I wanted with the solid back. So I bought mine and put a spare tire carrier on the back. In fact, it was common for Jeep dealers would order CJ-5s with the solid back due to customer preference and at some point in the late 70s-83, the solid back became standard, and the tailgate went away completely.
As far as your Jeep being an original Renegade, kind of hard to tell since CJs could be ordered with various options that were standard on the Renegade like my 76 was. However, according to my sales brochures the Renegade package lists the 304 V8 as standard with the Renegade 73 to at least 76. I have seen Renegades from the late 70s with the 6 cylinder engine though. I have a brochure for 79, (I think), I will check and see what it says about the V8 being standard on the Renegade in 79.
I think about the only way you are going to be able to tell for sure is if you can come up with the original sales information.
