I too am working on doing a similar swap. I have a Dana 44 from a 79 Wagoneer. I have already determined that it will be difficult. I have my frame outboarded and ready for the swap, but the lift kit I purchased is made to be used with a Dana 35.

Be advised that the 44 axle tube is wider in diameter than the 35, and so is the area on the differential where the spring mounts. My measurements were 3 inches on the drivers side, and 3.5 inches on the passenger side. Bigger U-bolts are needed for my swap, and some modifications to the spring plates for my suspension kit. I just spoke with a machinist this evening about getting this thing together, so I have no more information than what I have found out so far. I am sure there will be further difficulties I will encounter as well.

I have the poison spyder full width axle kit to get the axle mounted. I thought I read a thread somewhere about having to use a different pitman arm to make things work. Hopefully we an get someone who's done the swap to chime in. Am gonna try to get some pics as I'm doing the swap. The tube diameter for these are 2.75" when you get u bolts. I wrapped up the dana44 rear swap today. Can't wait to be done!

I have a Scout axle on the front of my 84 CJ7. If you measure from ball joint to ball joint on the inner knuckles of a scout D44 axle and a waggy D44 axle the difference is 1/8". They are almost the same from end to end with the same outers on them. The waggy axle has the pumpkin a little further inboard.

I outboarded the spring hangars and made a tie rod and drag link from DOM. My suspension is SOA. I have the stock CJ pitman arm.

The web is loaded with documentation on the Wagoneer Dana 44 swap.

The correct pitman arm to use in this swap is the Wagoneer pitman arm as the length matches the length of the steering arms on the waggie knuckles. You'll need a waggie drag link as well.

And outboard your spring hangers if your not cutting the axle down.

Wheel - Wreck - Wrench - Repeat!

The VIN says its a 79 CJ
