'77 CJ-5 Questions.......

My CJ is in great shape all except the wiring. I personally have not done much to it myself but want to start fiddling around more and more with upgrades and improvements. I don't have the money for a painless kit so if I do anything it will be repairing the worst pieces of wiring a little at a time. My main question is this.....is it possible to completely remove the dash so that I can get to the wires easier? I see the bolts to remove but I am just worried that by pulling the dash off the wires will come right off with it. I don't want this to happen of course so any suggestions/hints/or help is greatly appreciated. Also, I finally found a wiring diagram online from

http://www.offroaders.com/tech/Jeep-Wiring-Diagrams-1976-1977-CJ.htm

and I am so confused!! How the hell does one go about reading one of these?!?!

Thanks in advance

Dday

First of all, get a few copies of the the diagram, and BLOW IT UP!
Then take a marker, in the color of the wires if you can, and trace one wire at a time...
Mark the 'Red' wires with a red marker, green wires with green marker, ect.

Use a ruler when you can to keep on the correct wire.

Now, if you look at it in small bites...
Like JUST the head light wiring, or just the alternator wiring, it will start to make sense...

Every wire will be marked with a number, a color, sometimes there will be a solid color with a 'Stripe'.
We call that a 'Trace'...
And a wire size, or 'Gauge'.

Example, "14B RED W/TR 16"
14B (harness number)
Red or Red w/Tr (color, solid or striped)
16 (American Wire Gauge size of the wire, we just say 'Gauge' or 'Ga.')

So, when you see a wire marked "75B RED W/TR 14"
you know it's Harness number "75B",
it's "RED", "W/TR" "With/Trace" or 'With A Stripe' and sometimes it will give the strip color, but not in this case,
and it's 14 Ga. wire.

Wire gauges, larger the number, smaller the wire.
2 Ga. is VERY LARGE, battery cable or welding cable in fact.
18 Ga. is VERY SMALL.

Does this help?

Thanks

Yes that helps me understand what all those annotations mean. I think I will take the JPEG to kinkos and have them blow it up or something so I have a huge copy. Thanks again for the info.
