76 CJ5 unable to start

Hello all, I have been trying to track down a fix for my starting issue. My CJ would start and run every time. It sat for a month or so without being started.

Then I went to start it and when I turn the key (fully charged battery) the starter spins but the Jeep wont start. I used an inline spark tester, but it showed no spark at all.

I cleaned the ground on the front of the engine and checked all my wires.

I have installed a new ignition module, coil, solenoid, distributor and starter. I used an OHM meter and have verified that there is 12volts of power making it to the distributor. So, I am a bit baffled as to why the CJ wont start.

I bought the CJ5 already fitted with a 360 V8 installed, so....manuals are not helping me much with this trouble shooting.

If you can help, I would appreciate the input.

I've returned enough parts to know that "new" means nothing when it comes to CJ parts.

The FSM, or even a Haynes Manual, has a detailed section on ignition testing.

Are you still running the stock ignition system?

Yes it is the stock system - I used an OHM meter and have verified that there is 12volts of power making it to the distributor. That would eliminate any bad hardware to the distributor, I would assume.....

Do you have a manual of any sort?

Or are you hoping we hold your hand thru the whole diagnoses procedure?

Well stock could be points, Prestolight or Duraspark distributor.

Any idea which one you have?
Pictures will help

Also While it's important to have power going into the coil (+) it important the (-) side of the coil is switching. Put your DVM on the (-) points and see it it's jumping up and down when cranking or is it a steady 12 volts or 0 volts...



Just pretend the 360 is a 304 because the ignition systems are similar.

I have a manual for the CJ5 and a Wagoneer - since the 360 was used in the Wagoneer and the Cherokee -

I did not ask anyone to hold my hand - I asked for advice and suggestions. If you are going to bust my chops, feel free to move on to another thread.

I have spent many hours troubleshooting this issue. And I am posting my query hoping someone, with some helpful knowledge will read my overview in its entirety and may recall an issue like this.

67 or 76 CJ? 67 manual will be of little help. The Wagoneer manual will be better, what year Wagoneer?

It has electronic points.
Yes I did confirm the coil function as well - I did get a jump while trying to start it.

I pushed through the casing on the power lead from the coil to the distributor, to verify that power was making it to the distributor. I replaced the distributor thinking the "old" one was dead. But, the problem was not corrected by this action.
