You hit the nail on the head, they started making them in 1976... must be a typo on the title... post up some pictures, the VIN, etc. to show what you are talking about that it is a 1974.

I doubt that is the case, considering the V8 made it in the CJ line in 72 when AMC took over.

It's already been said, but what does the VIN say it is?

You can leave the last six digits of the VIN out when you post it. Those are the serial number portion of the VIN and don't contain any identifying information.

Off the top of my head, 1978 CJ7 with a 304 if I remember correctly.

No. There wasn't a 1974 CJ7. There may have been prototypes in the works, but certainly less than 10, let alone 4000.

Look at the frame: if it's boxed, it's no '74. Also, (assuming it's stock) look at the distributor. A 1974 would have a points system Delco distributor. 1975 through 1977 had a Prestolite system with the ignition control module on the RIGHT fender at the front towards the radiator. It's kind of a gold color. Starting in 1978 Jeep started using a Ford distributor and ICM. It is located on the LEFT fender towards the firewall.

Also, if the Jeep is stock and not repainted, there should be a VIN sticker on the left side of the dash towards the edge.

We ALL want that amazing find. But think about it; 4000 1974 CJ7s? That's a PRODUCTION RUN.

Disc brakes were always available on CJ7s, if only as an option at the beginning.

Heck, no matter what year it is, let DMV keep thinking it's a 1974. At least here in Kalifornia, 1974 is" pre-smog". Get the info for your own piece of mind, but keep the smog Nazi's in the dark.

Just my opinion

Someone said that the AMC 360 was a Ford 360.
Someone said that the AMC 360 was a Chrysler 360.
Someone said that the AMC 304 was an IHC 304.
Someone said that AMC didn't build their own engines.
Someone said the AMC 327 was a Chevy 327.

I have heard all of these things repeated as facts because "someone" said them. I don't know who that someone is, but he's wrong. There is most definitely no such thing as a 1974 CJ7. Whoever told you that cockamamie story about building 4000 of them for testing has quite an imagination.

And whoever suggested to title it incorrectly to deceive emissions testers is advising you to commit title fraud, which is a felony. If the VIN doesn't match the title you are in trouble.

DMV titled it as such. I am in no way stating that anyone commit fraud, but they are the ones who labeled it as a 74, not the o.p.
