Your tub is aftermarket fiberglass.

The '75 and prior have straight frames. The '76 and up have frames that get wider in the back. The body mounts are in different locations on each.

Since the fiberglass tubs vary a great deal from the OE tubs, you just have to crawl under there and do some measuring. Either way, it's not going to be hard to fab up some body mounts for a fiberglass tub.

That Jeep looks complete and with some cool vintage mods already done. Why not just wheel it as is and find yourself a steel tub for the '78?

Well, the 51 has no power steering, half of the gas pedal is under the brake pedal(makes for interesting footwork), and the "body mounts" are 2x4's...yeah, I just don't feel comfortable driving it around the farm, let alone on the road or over rocks.lol

Even if I modify the body mounts, will the firewall still be compatible?

Well I solved my problem, I bought a brand new glass tub from 4wd. It'll be here tomorrow. =)

Hello everyone, I would like some advice about my jeep. I have a 1980 cj5 and the tub is pretty rusty, I have a spare tub but it's for a 1975 cj5.

How difficult and what would I have to do to change the tub over?

As well as do you think it's a good idea to put a small block chevey in the jeep?

Find a 76-82 CJ5 tub, they are better built compared to the 1972-75. They floor is strnger and the mounts are correct for your Jeep

Engine conversion is your choice, many Jeep owners stick with AMC V8's to simplify installation.
