64 Cj 6 Questions!!! Please Help
I'm looking at a 64 cj6 it is bone stock for the most part it has the stock 76 horse 4 cylinder, 3 sp. The owner said that it tops out at 45, when it was running great. It puffs out white smoke, I think the valves are ruined because it was never changed to run unleaded fuel and that is what this guy has been running. If the engine was rebuilt and I swaped a t-18 trans or maybe a 5 speed. would I be able to go 65 ish. I just don't like the idea that I wouldn't be able to go on the highway if I needed to. Unfortinitly I don't have the cash to do a engine swap and such. Please help if you could and let me know how much money a trans and rebuild kit costs ruffly.
Thanks alot, hopefully I'll have a jeep soon that not every other person has. referring to my TJ)

I had a 64 CJ-6 exactly as you describe. When I blew a head gasket on it, it puffed white smoke. The best thing I ever did to that CJ-6 was a Chevy V-8 conversion along with a Warn overdrive. I ran a 283 V8 with a small four barrel and headers. Running 12-15 gumbo mudders with the 5.38 gears, a rear Power Lok and the overdrive gave me decent gas mileage and great performance. Never broke anything either. Why the hell did I sell it? That's what I keep asking myself.

If you want to go faster ditch the stock motor. Even with an overdrive you won't make much more than 55. If you regear with that motor then it won't pull itself at all. That four is a great torque maker but won't crank RPM or horsepower. Like jeep jake said, engine conversion (a V6 might be enough) and an overdrive.

OD would probably be enough with a strong F-head to get you up to 60 or 65 on the flat stretches. I've had a 3B with an F-head up to 55 w/ no OD (for very short periods of time).

Unless someone went to alot of effort the 6 volt system was easily gone by '64, phased out in the '50s in favor of 12V.
Generators are not uncommon. A single wire Delco internally regulated will work nicely. We just discussed it in my forum the other day. Stop by and do a search. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/
