5.3 swap info

Hello all, i've been poking around on the forum, and apparently my search function hates me.

I've got this crazy idea that i'm going to build a scrambler with a 5.3, sm420, 4:1 d300, 60 front 3 link coilover, 14b 4 link coilover, and on and on.

The depressing part is i found great deals on an sm420, and a flat top 3/4 ton 44, and matching 14b from a 74 k20, so MAW keep going...

I'm looking for some info on the 5.3 swap into cj's.

I know there are a couple of you on here some where, would you be so kind as to post up some pics, and share you experiences, tips, and/or links to your build threads?

As always it's much appreciated.

I did the 5.3 swap and its been great! (now that I'm done with it!) It had its headaches but a lot of that was because I went with the matching 4L60E which forced me to mount the motor as far to the drivers side as I could so the front driveshaft would clear the tranny pan, this in turn had the header rubbing the steering column. I got it all sorted out but it would have been much easier had I gone with a manual trans like you are planning to. you should have it much easier.

IF you go with the Vortec motors made after 2002 (I think) you have to get the gas pedal from the donor vehicle as well since its throttle by wire instead of the good old linkage throttle. Obviously you need to get the computer too..

Here's a couple pics of my setup.

Here you can see the exhaust rubbing the steering just a bit, older pic and has since been fixed

New gauges and custom computer mount from my buddy who owns KORE4x4Customs. I also went ahead and twin sticked mine.

I went with a fuel cell in the back behind my drivers seat and inline fuel pump mounted to the frame below. I couldnt find an in tank pump I was pleased with that provided that much higher fuel pressure required to operate the Vortec motors.

These are all older pics from right after the swap was done, I've since added in a lot of other goodies but havent uploaded them to photobucket yet. But this should give you an idea.

kickingprop that's exactly what i'm looking for, thank's very much.

The 03+ have electronic throttle or Drive By Wire, and Vortec's started in 1992 or so, I've been doing a ton of research on Pirate.

Kickingprop what did you do about fuses and under hood fuses? Which motor mounts did you go with?

I used KORE4x4Customs in Tulsa for a lot of my stuff since the owner is a good friend of mine.

As far as Fuses go, I had a guy local make my wiring harness and re-used the current fuseblock for all my accessories, etc and got a new fuseblock mounted to the side of the master cylinder for the new stuff (fuel pump, computer, etc).

I just moved to Houston and my rig is in Tulsa still as KORE had just begun my RollCage when I got the word to move down here. I'm picking it up Nov 13th when I go home next. Remind me sometime after 11/13 and I can snap pics of anything you need.

I dont remember who my motor mounts were from. But a lot of people on here have been very pleased with the Novak mounts for the vortec swaps it seems.

I had a BOM with everything I have bought and used on this project and what vehicles random parts came off of. Unfortunately my house in Tulsa was burgled a week before I moved so I lost my copy on my computer. I'm slowly finding receipts, etc and filling in the voids though..
