4-Speed choice!

Can anyone offer advice as to which 4-speed transmission best, and which to avoid? Also, is there an easy way to visually "I.D." the suckers looking under the Jeep? Any info on transfer cases would also be helpful!

Thanks, Bruce

Avoid the T4 and stick with a T176. Both were used in Cjs in the 80s. A T4 won't handle the power of a V8, however, a T176 will (I think AMC used it behind the 304). If you're looking for one, I might now of a place to get one. (Email me off list.)

SM 465 or a earlier SM 420 gm truck tranny w/granny 1st gear. The 420 has a really low 1st gear ratio of 7.05.

Problem solved, thanks for the advice gentlemen! I made my decision and am now the "keeper" of the most perfect 1986 CJ-7 I have ever seen outside of a museum! It has the 258CID, T-176, Dana 300 and a lovely GOLD Emblem from the assembly line on the dash proclaiming it as being "One of the Last" signifying that it was built in the last 90 days of CJ production before the Wrangler came online.

If you are interested in seeing the photos, they are still online at
http://www.collinsbrosjeep.com/inventory.html

Mine is Photo #43 and Stock # 3249. And yes those ARE the wrong wheels. Does anyone have a set of the original "White Spoke" with Center Caps they would be interested in parting with?

Thanks for the help! Bruce

Bruce, I got em - might need to repaint them, but they are sold, and the center caps look good. Only have four though, it had a stupid polyspare when I bought it.

Let me know, I'll let em go cheap.

You do realize that you can go back and edit your post, don't you? Sure makes it easy to fix those screw-ups - not that I ever get any of course...but...
